Reform The GLAAD Media Reference Guide

While watching the latest flare-up in an ongoing war of words between Transgender activists and (usually long-term post-operative) transsexuals, I took the opportunity to review the oft-cited GLAAD Media Reference Guide.

What I found is that the Guide is overtly hostile toward, and dismissive of, transsexuals. To explain why I have come to this opinion, let's first examine the Guide as it defines transgender.

Transgender

An umbrella term (adj.) for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. The term may include but is not limited to: transsexuals, cross-dressers and other gender- variant people. Transgender people may identify as female-to-male (FTM) or male-to-female (MTF). Use the descriptive term (transgender, transsexual, cross-dresser, FTM or MTF) preferred by the individual. Transgender people may or may not decide to alter their bodies hormonally and/or surgically.

I agree that it should be changed.

Frankly, I am not a cross dresser.  At least not any more.  I gave that up when I purged the last of my male clothes.

I am a transsexual.  I would truly like to be referred to as that, not necessarily as part of the over-all umbrella of transgender.  Actually my first preference is female.  My transsexuality no more redefines my femininity that any other birth defect like diabetes.

However, there has been a fair amount of talk about splintering the "T" off from the LGB from a vocal, and activist, minority of the greater LGB movement.  Claiming that "Those trans people (sometimes in more disparaging terms) cost us ENDA."  And who can forget Barney Franks compassionate words of "If men in dresses are going to be in the ladies room putting on lipstick, then there's not enough votes for that".

The transgender people have always been a minority within a minority.  And we transsexuals are a minority within a minority, within a minority.

If transgender is split off from LGB and transsexual is splintered off from that, our voices alone will be so faint as to be very easily ignored.  And great fodder for television comedy, a very visible minority with no voice.  That SNL sketch would be just the tip of the iceberg.

I agree that all media reference guide should have much more specific and compassionate referrals about transsexuals that do not automatically lump us with cross-dressers.  Most media reference guides and guidelines were probably set up without any transsexual input, but made an effort to be considerate in the reference.  But even as a compassionate reference, they are still inaccurate.

And what about all the folks who are intersex?  Are they automatically under the umbrella term of transsexual?  I fear that many, if not most, do not think of themselves as that and wish to be referred to as Intersex, or IS.

But I am at a loss on how to better define those in our community (which ever way you wan to split it up), and do that without it appearing as splintering the LGBT movement and losing what little voice we have in society and politics.

Thanks, Sandy. I have been on the fence myself for the last 6 months about how I view the transbrella (on my own without seeing articles about the desire to split).  I tried very hard to say on the other side of the fence, siding with political correctness and some kind of peace. I wanted to discuss it with people but when I did (on another site) was pretty much destroyed for it. It felt like there was a gang of thugs attacking me! I deleted the post and just tried to let it rest but recently I brought it up again and the same thing happened. Well, I am tired of trying to keep the peace and have a politically correct dialog about it. That didn't work and I don't see it ever working in the future.

Some may know that I run a blog that targets news and blog articles for offensive reporting of transgender related articles. I often refer to GLAAD's media reference guide and have been told by a few that referring to that is endorsing GLAAD's definition of transgender.  I am going to change this but am not sure how to approach it. I don't think there is a media guide that focuses on trans/is issues. If you know of one please let me know!
