Rae Spoon hunts down his electro roots

VANCOUVER -- If, for some, the blending of electronic music into traditional folk could be seen as a bit sacrilegious, for Calgary-bred, Montreal-based singer-songwriter Rae Spoon, it finally all makes sense.

Spoon's latest album, Love Is A Hunter, sees the female-to-male transgender artist taking two years' worth of time spent in Germany and incorporating that country's "robotic" roots into his music.

"I was explaining to one of my friends over there what folk music was and what I did — the 'music of the people' — and, very seriously, he told me that 'folk' music in Germany was techno," Spoon says via the phone from Montreal. "It really changed my perspective.
