I live in an area of Virginia that happens to be 2-4 hours from all metropolitan areas (ie anywhere that would be remotely trans-friendly) . I have called endos in my area to see if they treated transgender patients and received a less than pleasant response from the staff (including some giggles...how professional!). I happen to travel to NYC once every 1-2 months for a few days so I was thinking I could possibly use Callen-Lorde. Before I called the clinic (I have heard their response time is less than stellar) I figured I would ask all of you folks. I am an underemployed, uninsured student so the sliding scale option looks attractive but, I wasn't sure if you had to be a resident of NY to get financial assistance. I am also curious about what the average turn around time is for blood-work to receiving prescriptions as I would have to plan visits to the city accordingly. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I know for a fact that you don't have to be a resident of either the city or the state of NY to receive both their services and the sliding scale discount.

It takes them about a week on average to receive the blood work results (from an off site lab in NJ, billed separately), the only constraint is the schedule of whoever will be treating you. Most of the times you'll wait for a few weeks (or months when they're busy), and if you're lucky you will manage to take over someone else's canceled appointment.

I have been goin to Callen Lorde for almost 2 years. First thing, first appt. You get a physical and make your bloodwork appt. For the same day.  After the dr sees your blood is normal, he has the pharmacy dept call your pharmacy with the scrpt.  After 1 month you must return with blood work which may be done at a lab by you home.  He gets it,  and then sees you in three mnths, then six months, then every year after that only for a physical and blood. 
Ask for Dr. Victor Inada- he is awesome!
