Born and bred.  I still live here, too.

Bridget....GO San Antonio!  I lived there for a little over four years. I went to elementary and middle school there.

Stephanie

I'm from Bonnie Scotland!  Several thousand miles east of Texas.   :D

I saw a documentary about a little town in Texas where they had built one of those private prisons.  The local sherriff was popular with the white community as he went down to the black part of town and arrested many of them on trumped up charges.   It seems that most people in this town are so reliant upon the employment the prison provides that they are turning a blind eye to all the racist and classist goings on.

Well hello Stephanie from Scottland! I have some really good friends who live in London. I realize a bit of a way form Scotland, but closer than myself. I don't know the documentary or town you speak of, but it does not surprise me. I wouldn't call Texas the progressive place in the world. LOL. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Texas still is in the dark ages. Not all of it...or everyone, but this type of prehistoric thinking is most definitely still around and in large quantity. Texas is a very frustrating place. And to be honest, I am looking at moving away again. I enjoy staying for a bit, but that mentality and type of person get old very quick. I was actually looking for work in London. I would love to live in the UK....At least for a spell. You know try it on for size. How is Scotland in reference to cultural and social issues? How do they treat/accept Transgenders? Have a good day!

I love Austin, does that count?
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...
  •

Miss Natasha Cleaver

Heck yes Austin counts! I am in Austin, and it is great. An oasis in the state.
  •

tekla

Yeah I got that impression too, just like Fresno is a little bit of Oklahoma in the middle of California.

  •

Miss Natasha Cleaver

hahaha! I guess so...I have never been to Fresno, but I have heard rumors. Austin is a unique mix of conservative and liberal. Where abouts are you located?
  •

tekla

San Francisco, where once a week all the conservatives get together and hope that they can find one liberal to join them so they could have a fourth for bridge.

But back in the 90s I was at SXSW every year there for a while.

San Francisco....Always wanted to visit northern California. been to Southern California....Never up North. SXSW....you went in the glory years....it has become quite a monstrous event, and difficult to easily navigate for the music portion anyway. The film side is still pretty great.

tekla

Yeah I always wanted to do the the film/media deal, but never managed that, but I did spend a lot of time at the LBJ library doing research for my dissertation, nice place that.

LBJ Library is a great place. Great library, then go out and have a sandwich on the lawn. Good day! if you don't mind me inquiring....what was your dissertation on?
  •

tekla

The Decline of Technological Enthusiasm in America - 1957-1970

Miss Natasha Cleaver

wow....quite a dissertation topic. What did you find? I did my thesis on eastern European theatre.

I found that the more you look at something the less it looks like what you thought it looked like.
