Hi everyone! I've joined this forum for reasons slightly different than most. I'm writing my senior thesis in Psychology on transgender individuals; my goal is to summarize the existing psychological literature, point out the numerous flaws in how clinical psychology treats trans people who seek help, and suggest alterations in procedure and thinking that would better serve trans people who seek counseling.
I want y'all to know that I respect each and every one of you and your decisions, and my goal with this thesis is to potentially contribute something that could make your lives easier to the field. This is not about "curing" anyone; this is about detailing how the system should be altered to meet your needs.
With that in mind, I will be lurking on the boards. My goal here is to get a feel for the transgender online community; it's for personal experience, and nothing that I observe will be included in my paper.
However, if you would like to speak to me directly about  your experience (anonymously or otherwise), I would love to hear from you! Feel free to PM or email me-- I want to hear any story that you have to tell.

Hi tesslacoil

welcome
If I read it well(English is not my native language) you want to know for your thesis how to improve the mental care for TG's.
Well, I think a point is the after care.
In my expirience there is a guidance to the journey of transition but after you had have srs, you're alone.
Nobody tells you what to expect, for the TG it's a matter of trial and error.
I think some guidance for a while after srs could be welcome for some people.
An other aspect is accepting, in my time ir was very hard but when I read the stories here it looks of time stood still.
The problems of rejecting by friends and family.
I know you can't change those people but there might be a way to handle it for the TG with help from a therapist.
I'll hope that I made a small contribute to your thesis.

hugs

Hi Tessla, :icon_wave:

Welcome to our little family. Over 5900 strong. That would be one heck of a family reunion.

Feel free to post your successes/failures, Hopes/dreams.  Ask questions and seek answers. Give and receive advice.

But remember we are family here, your family now. And it is always nice to have another Ally. :icon_hug:

And be sure to check out these links ( MUST READS )

Many of us are approaching our "golden" years.  And there is not much in the way of senior GLBT support.  Let alone nursing homes that are trained in the special needs for the TG community.

Hugs and Love,
Janet

Hi Tesslacoil,

I hope your observations here will be helpful in your thesis.

I suppose most of us will gladly answer any questions that you may have.

Sometimes you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, and sometimes in the middle of nowhere, you find yourself.
