Transitioning In the Workplace

Hello!

My situation is this: I was hired at the hospital here in Missouri as a male employee. About two weeks ago I discussed my desire to transition at work with my direct supervisor. She was a little thrown off but overall seemed supportive and stated that she doesn't have a problem with it. She did say, however, that it'd need to be discussed wither upper management (which I can understand).

This morning she pulled me aside and advised me that she had discussed this with the CEO of the hospital and that both of them are supportive and will be pursuing a meeting with the Chancellor, as well as Human Resources. I'm quite nervous, but she plans on holding a staff meeting (of which I'll be absent so that everyone may speak freely) to discuss what will happen. I don't plan on transitioning at work until after summer (to build up my wardrobe and critique my flaws [my voice being the most important]).

So, this is good news! Holla'!

WTG, Danielle!  I've been with my company about 12-1/2 years, and I spoke with my supervisor in January regarding my plans - she was immediately supportive.  Within a week, she had met with the head of IT, the HR manager and the President, all of whom were overwhelmingly supportive.  They then started meeting weekly to discuss plans, and I'll be reporting to work as Colleen on April 25!  I see the endo today, hopefully I'll be on HRT tomorrow.  Name change won't happen till later in the summer, I've got a house to sell and separation from my wife to settle before then, but... onward!  Remember, you have rights.

Omg! That's so awesome, Colleen! I'm not sure how the Chancellor or HR will react, as this has never happened amongst the entire hospital system. Both of my immediate supervisors are supportive, however, since we're associated with University of Missouri Health System, I have to go through them, as well. *sigh* I'm crossing my fingers, girl!

My company is part of a large, multinational equipment manufacturing enterprise (I work for just a small part of it - credit operations), and I was amazed to find out that I am not the first or only, although it seems like I will be the first transgendered employee to fully transition in the workplace.  There are two others in the US, and they have put me in touch with them, which is AWESOME!  Our company even has a position called "Director Global Diversity and Inclusion".  I do hope your employer doesn't cause problems for you.  I'll pray for you...

When I came out at work, I demanded that I be there for the general staff meeting.  They actually introduced the meeting and then let me take over.  I explained everything (except anything dealing with anatomy) and everyone was okay.  My transition couldn't have gone better, and I truly wish you all could experience such a smooth transition as I did. 

We have an open door policy here, as I am sure a lot of places do.  So if anybody did have any concerns or other questions they did not want to bring up either at the meeting or with me personally, I ensured that they could go to their managers for the information.

There are about 230 people in the office where I work.  The subset of upper management that knows has put together a communication plan to disseminate the information while I'm on vacation.  My last day at work as Tim is April 8, then I go on vacation for 2 weeks.  On Monday, April 11, the communication plan goes into effect, starting at 8:00 am, when my immediate team will be brought in and given the news, followed by all of IT, followed by all the managers of other departments, who will be told that they need to meet with their teams to give them the information.  By noon that day, everyone in the office will have been communicated to, and the clear message to them is that no form of intimidation, harassment or ridicule will be tolerated - at all.  The next day, an external consultant will hold workshops for everyone who is interested (they will be STRONGLY urged to attend).  She is a transwoman herself, and a very good speaker.  Then everyone will have the rest of the 2 weeks to digest the information and get used to the idea.  I expect when I return, I will have an easy time of things.  I'm sure there will be some who initially have difficulty with it, but I'm counting on the idea that to the extent I present myself with confidence, as a normal woman, people will get over their discomfort in short order.

Yeah my company didnt bring in an outside subject matter expert because I am my company's subject matter expert when it comes to this trans stuff.  I am on the board for my company's LBGTA group and the only one on the board that is trans at that.  We are a multi-national corporation with about 20 offices in the United States alone.

Oddly enough, as large as the system I work for is, we do not have a LGBTQ resource center. My supervisor informed me that she would be holding a meeting, but as of right now she is trying to get the meetings setup with the President, Interim President, HR, etc.

I only hope my transition is as smooth as all of yours.
