Grave of Stone Age 'gender bender' excavated in Prague

Archaeologists have unearthed a unique late Stone Age grave of a 'transsexual or gay man' in a suburb of the Czech capital

Czech archaeologists have discovered what they are calling a "third gender grave" — a unique late Stone Age grave of a transsexual or gay man — dating from between 2500-2800 BC and the era of the so-called Corded Ware culture in the Czech Republic. Speculation about the sexual orientation of the buried man was sparked by the unorthodox positions in which his skeleton was found, in a society which was a real stickler for grave etiquette.

"From history and ethnology, we know that when a culture had strict burial rules they never made mistakes with these sort of things," the head of the archaeological research team Kamila Remišová told journalists at a press conference about the finds on Tuesday.

Its nice to think that Stone-age people were less judgemental than the people of today.

Not to put a damper on things, but what if this guy was buried with the women as some sort of final gesture of humiliation?

If they felt that way about him they would have kicked him out of the tribe and he wouldn't have gotten a burial

In the 70s, when I was attempting to construct a postulate to explain the persistance of homosexuality and the instinct of belonging to the opposite gender, I suggsted that, in feral times, people with varying sexual and gender needs were not just tolerated, but paticipated within the tribal setup.

I also attempted to suggest some important roles that people in these situations could have played.

I didn't then nor now, have any substantive evidence of course. It was all conjecture, based upon the observation of the persistance of homosexuality and transgender. But this find may be an intreguing indicator.

Or perhaps not.  :)

One more reason to make sure I'm cremated. Or at least buried with a "->-bleeped-<- Anthropologists! Leave Me Alone!" sign.
