I got talked into going to prom with a friend and I need to rent a tux. My name has not been changed yet and I'm pre-op. Has anyone had any experience getting measured for a tuxedo and how it works? I'm going to mens wearhouse. Will they need a credit card to rent or can you pay in cash and do you get to keep your clothes on when being measured?

Renting a tux isn't such a great idea. I had my tux (for prom) tailored specifically for my body. There wasn't much trouble when I was measured. You try on some different tuxedo jackets trying to get the right fit in the length of the actual jacket (should have your fingers just barely touch the end when standing up straight) and the fit in the shoulder or hips, whichever is widest. I ended up getting a 1 button because it's the easiest to fit for a person with wide hips.

Why is renting a bad idea? I definitely can't afford to buy a tux.

You can't get it tailored (I think?).

I rented a tux for my senior prom, and they measured me and got a tux that fit perfectly. Because I'm a small person, I got a tux in the boy's size. This place allowed you to choose the details (jacket, vest, tie...) and if they had what you wanted in stock, you got it. If not, you had other options as well. Because it was a boy's size, I got everything I wanted. Not gonna lie, I looked amazing.
And the ladies measuring me just gushed at how great the tux looked on me. :)

When my son was a sophomore he went to prom with his g/f.  We looked at renting but discovered we could buy one for $200 at JCPenny's....so we bought him one ... and had it altered to fit him.  It's a basic tux ... and then we got a tux shirt / tie cumber bun & all that jazz.  The next years we only bought new ties & cumber buns to match his dates partner.  He has even worn it a couple times in college for events.  Well worth the investment - imo

Thanks nygeel. Hopefully I'll find one that fits good enough without needing it tailored bc I can't afford to buy.

Thanks yakshini. That's good to hear that I might be able to find one that fits ok. When they measured you was it with all your clothes on? That's really all I'm worried about is whether I'm going to have to out myself or not.

Yes, they measured me with my clothes on. So no worries in that regard. The might notice your measurements not being typical of the average guy, but I highly doubt they would say anything about it.

I you do get one fitted tell the tailor you have gynecomastia and you want something to downplay your chest.

Also if he asks you wich way you dress, that is wich way you pack (you probly knew that but we don't want any mishaps) if you don't pack just pick a direction the tailor won't know or care.
