But the support was there in the end...or it least is was there in a whip count by Equality Maryland.

As Metro Weekly (in their articles Gender Identity Bill Sent Back to Committee and 2012 by Maryland Senate and Breakdown of Maryland Senate Vote to Send Gender Identity Bill Back to Committee in 2012) and the Washington Blade (in the article BREAKING: Md. trans bill dead for year) reported yesterday (April 11, 2011), Maryland's gender identity bill -- HB 235 -- was referred back to the Senate's Judicial Proceedings Committee on the last day of the 2011 session -- functionally killing the bill. The vote was 27-20 to recommit HB 235 -- "recommit" being the term for sending a bill back to committee. The two publications reported that there were 6 votes that were expected to vote to for passage of the bill that actually went to recommitting the bill, and this surprised a number of the bill's supporters.

One of the senators who voted for recommitment of HB 235 was Sen. Zirkin, who voted for passing the bill to the Senate floor in the Judicial Proceedings Committee, and Sen Robey, who won an award from Equality Maryland in 2009.
