Terms regarding transgender individuals can be confusing. Here are some distinctions, culled from various sources:

Transsexual: Physical appearance and gender identity are at odds, causing conflict and anguish. May or may not resort to "gender reassignment" (see below).

->-bleeped-<-: Also called cross-dresser. The person wears clothes of the opposite sex, often as a sexual release.

  Lovely...the media takes it upon themselves to explain to the rest of the confused public the distinctions of transgender terms and this what they come up with.

  ->-bleeped-<-s and crossdressers are synonomous (since when, oh wise reporter person? The 60's? The 50's? earlier?)

  Stand by while I explain the distinctions of quantum physics to the masses.

Well ->-bleeped-<- was more or less replaced by a whole group of terms, one of which is crossdresser.  I think they crossed wires between a crossdresser and a transvestic fetishist though.
