Hey guys hows it going? Alright I have a few questions yet again ha I was wondering if anybody went to Bangkok Thailand for their top surgery. I'm not looking for the cheapest thing but I am looking to save some money if it is possible at all.

In Thailand our money is worth a lot more I believe a dollar in u.s money is what 32 dollars over there. Well I also heard that Thailand is very trans gender friendly. Taking that in mind I was thinking about just flying over there staying about two weeks & getting it done. Plus I wanted to see Thailand anyways so if I can plan that one with it then I would love to. I have not started T yet but I do plan too here real soon as soon as I get my check next week but anyways has anybody gone over there to do their surgery? If so, how much did you end up paying? Who did you go to? Did it turn out good? I would love all the help i could get. Thanks very much

Okay... I'm sorry. I've done no research on this, but can say with a fair amount of certainty that even if the surgery were cheaper in Thailand than in America, you'd end up paying the same, if not (likely) quite a bit more after flight and hotel, etc., were factored in. You can have top surgery done in America by an excellent surgeon for under $6000, which is pretty darned good, and at least you know what medical standards doctors are held to. Would you really want to subject yourself to surgery under the care of a doctor who adheres to different standards and may not speak English sufficiently to tell you if problems arise?

That said, if you really want to see Thailand, do it. But I certainly wouldn't advise having surgery there unless there's no other option.

No offence intended at all, and I too have considered travelling for surgery but keep coming back to the fact that once I pay for accommodation and airfares it will work out about the same  And as much as I want to see the US - will I really do much sight seeing once I'm cut? Then what if I need revision?! I have to fly all the way back there for it (if its free/covered)...

It sucks. I don't have money to burn but I don't want a crap result either - I don't think I'll ever select a surgeon!! But I dare say you guys have the better surgeons in the States...

Nothing against the Thai docs but just my opinion. And as Seb said - different standards in different countries. Even the surgeons here in Oz - though not bad at all and I've seen some awesome results, just don't seem to be as exposed to the kinds of surgeries we require... And it only takes one disarstrous result to turn you off.

But if I was already over there - no way I'd be looking anywhere else. Spend the $$ on surgery at home, recouperate, save again and take your Thai holiday when you can run around with your shirt off dude!

You would probably end up paying the same amount once u add up all the airfares accomodation etc...Just like the other two guys have said, avoid going to Thailand unless thats your only option left.

I don't mean to bust your bubble but its actually quite the opposite in Thailand, very discriminatory against trans ppl.  They make it seem like they are but in fact they're not.  MTF's especially have such a difficult time...

and thailand has a verry high standard of health care, much higher than my own country so again it is poor to just throw comments out there when you probably have no experienced it for you self

Thinking about a trip like this is really a matter of forward planning.

Accommodation is, of course, the most important consideration.

The cost of treatment is equally important.

Personally, if I were planning this, I'd start by googling hotels in Thailand.

The prices are in Thai Baht and this can be checked by googling a currency converter.

Currently, $1 US = 32 Baht £1 = 52 Baht

Found some 5* hotels here http://www.bangkok.com/hotels/ Room costs about $81 or £50 a night.

Personally, I would never go to expensive hotels, anywhere. Shop around for location and prices.

Whatever you decide, this is something where the finances must be carefully planned first.

I can say, that in Asian countries, generally, prices are prety low. But I suggest you should be thinking of about £50 or $75 a day to live on.

I meant no disrespect by my comment. I simply meant standards may be different over there than the OP is used to in his country. I didn't say poor - I said different. You are at just as much risk or complication at a surgeon in the States as anywhere - I simply thought in my opinion they seem to have more exposure and more opportunities to do top surgery. Therefore deducing they would have better techniques.

I would never judge a place I have not been - I would love to see Thailand. I was simply referring to the fact that if it were me, and I lived in the US - I wouldn't be looking anywhere else for surgery.

Since I'd probably have to travel to get the TopSurgery results I want I've been thinking maybe Thailand would be a good choice. Some of the photos I've seen from there are pretty good, and it's one of the countries I'd want to visit "some day" anyway.

I am sorry for digging up this thread, but I wish I had found this sooner!

Basically I am looking to get my surgery in Thailand this summer at the PAI institute. (Someone mentioned above) Did any of you end up going there or met someone who did? I would really appreciate any tips/info regarding this.

From what I've heard Thai surgeries come out good- or no different that the U.S. and Canada. They seem to have great prices and I'd love to visit Thailand.

However- here is a warning for those who live in the U.S. Look at your state's requirements to get you gender changed on your BC. For my state you need to be on hormones and have had a hysto and meta or phallo. Why you have to have at least a meta but no top surgery is beyond me. All these surgeries have to be done by a surgeon licensed in the U.S. If any of these surgeries are done by a surgeon not licensed in the U.S. then the surgery will be invalid and will not count. Therefore, your gender can't be changed on your BC.

This is a completely dick law, but it is what it is. So, unless there's a foreign surgeon who also has a license to practice in the U.S. it can't be done by them. However, the law doesn't say the surgery has to be done in the states. It just has to be done by a U.S. licensed surgeon. I believe Dr. Djoprdjevic falls under this.

So, do your research carefully- about your birth state's laws and the surgeons' licenses. FYI my birth state is Illinois.
