The transsexual lifestyle

There is no such a thing as a transsexual lifestyle. After all, we don't talk about the "diabetes lifestyle" or the "bipolar lifestyle". If, as psychiatrists claim, transsexualism is a mental illness, then surely we cannot call it a lifestyle choice. And if, as many transsexuals (including myself) believe, transsexualism is a physical condition, then here too we cannot speak of a transsexual lifestyle. Calling it a lifestyle implies a commitment to a certain aesthetic. I don't aspire to any aesthetic in particular, unless we're talking about fitting in at work, wearing business casual. Transsexuals are men and women with an unusual story of how they got to be where they are.
