I've been on T for 3 months, and 3 weeks. I was rather hoping that I would be more passable by now. People are definitely unsure of my gender, and I have noticed that they are not willing to venture a guess, until they hear my voice. I didn't have a very high pitch voice to start out with, and I feel like it's definitely gotten scratchy, but I'm pretty certain that it's the main thing standing in the way of my passability. The big problem is that I'm 30 years old and I don't look young enough that people think I'm a teenaged boy, and therefore forgive me for my girly voice.

So, my question is for people who did not have a voice that could pass as male, before starting T. How long did it take for your voice to change enough to be able to pass on the phone?

I had a scratchy, yet somehow girlie voice.  I wish I knew of a voice to compare it to, but everyone knew I was female on the phone or through the drive-thru, but it was rough.  As if I smoked cigars or something!  Or had a sore throat.

It took me until about Month 6 for a real grrr voice to kick in.  Luckily it has still been progressing until about the 3 year mark.  Some of us are just slow. :/

Good luck!  Hang in, also, drink milk before bed at night (lactose free is fine)-- it used to make my voice even scratchier the next day for about 2 hours in the morning.  Not the biggest "Hooray!" but helped with my AM college courses. =P

Pre-T my voice was low female range. It didn't crackle or anything. I'm 5 months on T and my voice is usually picked up as female or ambiguous. I feel like most voices are clearly male around 3 months.

I had the "scratchiness" from about week 2, and the initial drop around 1 month. That said, I had a fairly low voice to begin with. As I recall, it dropped at month 1, month 3, and then sporadically from there on out. I've been on T about 3 years now, and I still have minor drops, but where it is right now is roughly where it's been for 2 years. I was 25 when I started; I know sometimes it takes a bit longer the older you are. Of course, it also depends in large part on genetics. You may want to talk to your male relatives... did their voices change early or late, all at once or gradually, etc.?

All I can say is, don't give up hope. I was a tenor after about 6 months on T, and now I'm a bass. It just takes time.

Definitely do not thing three months is soon enough for most voices.  I still get called ma'am on the phone a lot.  So my voice is definitely not there yet and I'm 6 months.  My friend is 7 months on cream and his voice has only barely dropped within the past month.

Lemme clarify. 3 months with injections on the right dose. With the videos I've seen on youtube it just seems like guys on hormones around 3 months have the crackle and drop.

I'm on injections on the right dose for me and my voice wasn't "clearly male."  Don't think that is a thing anyways since some cis men do not have a masculine or even man sounding voice.

There's a lot of variance from the videos I've seen.   I've watched dozens, and it seems like about half start changing significantly around 4-8 weeks, and just as many aren't much different for many months.  I'm at about 5 weeks myself and my voice is noticeably lower just this week.   I really do think genetics plays a part.  My dad has a very low voice and used to be a radio DJ for a major station when he was my age.  My brother also has a low voice, and mine was towards the lower end of things for being pre-T.    About cis-guys, Andy's right.  My ex was 6'2" and as hairy as a yeti, so he had no shortage of testosterone, but he still gets called 'm'am' when ordering at drive-thru's and on the phone.  His mother has the most horrifically high, shrill voice though, so it's no wonder.
