First of all I would like to say Hi to all the members by interducing myself.
My fem Name is Brandi. I live in indiana. Brandi has been around since I was around ten.
I am having trouble deciding on a type of wig. Do they make a synthetic hair wig that is soft as real hair. I bought a human hair wig And it feels like on of those cheep halloween wigs. I did splirge on EBAY for a short virgin hair wig and its great. But I would like a long wig, but not pay through the nose.

Hi Brandi,

Firstly welcome to Susans. My experience with wigs is a little dated as I haven't bought one for a few years. My experience at that time however if you want a natural looking one youhave to pay a fair bit. Both synthetic andrealhuman hair can look and feel quite natural provided you are willing to pay the price.

Hope this helps.

Welcome, Welcome Brandi,

I think that you find this a very comfy place to be, relax, enjoy yourself here, and be sure to read the rules.

Wigs - The good the bad, and the ugly.  The best place to shop for wigs is those establishments that serve Cancer patients, they know their stuff believe me.  You can't go wrong with synthetic wigs for long lasting everyday wear ability, durability, look and feel.  However, for a good one you will need to spend big bucks.  Check out locations near by, if you need addresses, check with your nearest hospital this type of information is freely available.

Hi Brandi,

I'm also a newbie from the land of corn. I can tell you that you're gonna pay more for a human hair wig. Paula Young has some at pretty decent prices. I did buy one from them but sent it back because I didn't like the color on me. It was a lot softer than my synthetic wigs, so when I can afford it I'm gonna try another one. good luck in yoour search.

I think the best way to buy a wig is to shop at a local TG friendly wig shop.  I own only one good wig that I bought several years ago.  It is a synthetic medium length.  I bought it at a shop that had been recommended by others in the local TG community.  When I bought it I dressed androgynously in jeans and a tee.  I went into the shop and said I was a CD looking for a wig to give me a more feminine appearance.  One of the girls at the shop helped me try on wigs and made very helpful suggestions as to style, color and length.  She ev en suggested ways to do my makeup to complement the hair look.  After settling on a wig I put on some of the makeup I had brought along in my purse and wore the wig home.  This was one of the best shopping experiences I have had.

Hi Brandi -

Thought maybe I could help a little...
Since my hairline receded badly in the last few years, it was very painful to consider the alternatives, and since hair replacement (which I will be doing at some point) is so incredibly expensive, Ive had to settle on alternatives (wig) to be really comfortable. I found an established wig store in my area that had been there for years, and last year, I bought my first "artificial" hairpiece (I hate the word "wig" - I find it loathesome) -
It really changed my life (very much more than I had ever thought it would) and helped me rediscover confidence in my looks that I couldnt even begin to describe here -

Ive had incredible experience with a line of Revlon artificials that look and feel so real, even professional hairdressers have complimented me on how beautiful my "hair" looks - and of course, in my natural color (seems to fit the best in general) - They do require some dedicated care (at least the long style that I prefer) and I do prefer to wash them and condition them every couple of days to keep them in very good condition. Be wary of tangles and the time it takes to properly brush and detangle them by hand so as not to break the strands (several hours a week), but i think you would be very happy with something like this if you can afford it...
These pieces only cost me about $130.00 apiece, and honestly, has been worth every single penny, and in many ways, since I came out in public and began transitioning last year, has helped make the beginning of my transitional process more incredibly and happily possible in ways that I never could have imagined.

Best of luck, hope this can help a little. Best to go in with full makeup(if you are comfortable in doing that, so you can really get the idea of how you will look with your preferred coloration if wearing makeup.), and just start trying some on - a good shop owner should be willing to accomodate you and give you helpful and appropriate feedback. I got lucky and fell in love with the first one I tried, and it stuck because its just so naturally me in so many ways.

Lovingly Always,

Annagirl
