veet/nair cream advice

after a horrible run-in with nair many years ago (the original formula isn't designed for faces, let's just leave it at that) i pretty much abandoned attempts at body hair removal unless it was an absolute necessity. testosterone has taken its course over the years and once again i find myself in an all too familiar position, no longer able to contain the ever increasing pressure: the need to feel comfortable in my own skin.

at the store, in the aisle that i want so desperately to avoid yet so often find myself haunting, i stumbled upon an unfamiliar product: veet. a lot has probably changed in the 10+ years since i last tried a depilatory cream, so i decided to give it another shot. it didn't work terribly well on my underarms. the next attempt was on my lower legs where it seemed to work a bit better, but still didn't yield acceptable results.

so, some questions...

what can i try to make this stuff more effective? it was applied after showering, to wet skin (checked and double checked the bottle, it does not specify wet or dry) and left to do its thing for 10 minutes. i'm thinking the next attempt will be immediately after soaking in a nice hot bath, with dry skin.

if the hair is full length, would trimming it beforehand help?

there is a men's version of nair, is it any more effective at removing coarse hair than the women's version?

Hi cwolf,
They are a very similar product. I find they work well on my arms. I wax and shave my legs, My chest and tummy are lasered, as is my face. So the arms are all there is. I put it on dry skin, leave for 6 minutes then wipe off with a face cloth, then wash/shower.

If you have had reactions to Nair, I would do a spot test to make sure you don't get the same reaction. NEVER use them on your face. They both contain sodium hydroxide that if you get it in your eyes will blind you.

PS plenty of places will wax 'guys'

cindy, thanks for the response. there doesn't seem to have been any adverse reaction. the killer part of this is the waiting game (72hrs) until i can try a different technique.

waxing isn't an option, unfortunately. too many ingrown hairs.

for what it's worth, i'm a non-trans genetic girl with polycystic ovarian syndrome. very high free testosterone levels, hirsutism.  it's a fun package. it seems a little weird for me to be posting here, but you ladies have a lot more experience with this stuff than the girls in the pcos forums. hopefully this isn't a problem.

Woo
Lady. Exactly why the place I get lasered was set up. It was set up for POCS, and still is. Have a Google in your local area. Getting zapped is the best way.

All my love darling.

I do know what it is like.

Go for it as far s laser is concerned, easy.

I use Veet occasionally for my private areas, just because I don't have the patience to do the larger areas.
Trimming the hair first will definitely help cut down of the work it has to do. Instead of using the little scraper that comes with most Veet products I like to use an actual razor and use it like a shaving cream after I let it set for 5-10 minutes. This tends to give me pretty good results. I don't know if the Men's version is any more potent than the woman's.

I hope I answered some of your questions.

I suspect the men's version (like with razors) is just the same formula with a different scent :). I didn't bother with the men's as the women's is cheaper in the UK - especially if you get it on special offer, which you can often find online. Trimming first means you use less gunk. It still smells pretty bad, though, to my nose. There's supposed to be some stuff you can get to smear on afterwards that neutralises the chemical residue (and gets rid of the smell), but I haven't found it available in the UK.

Hi Hon,

I rub in a nice body lotion. It helps stop drying of the skin and also smells good. You can get cute smellies cheaper than the Veet/Nair. I hope you are moisturising daily anyway, you certainly should after starting laser.

You all settled in?
