I think what happens is that the emotional state somewhat fluctuates on a deep level, so how you're subtly feeling makes a name seem appropriate---temporarily.  We probably would feel that way with our birth names, except that they don't as readily feel in our control.
I think it might be best to accept one that you think sounds good and alright to be called by, rather than focusing on one that 'sounds me' for you.

This. I didn't belabor my name change, didn't search through reams of birth records to find one. I picked one that I didn't hate that sounded enough like my birthname that it would be easy for others to pick up on. Two years later, it's legally changed, I still don't hate it, and it's just normal.

A name is very important, and I can understand the difficulty in choosing a name. To make it easier for me, I asked my mom what she would have named me if I was a girl, she chose Samantha. So that is what I went with. Sort of made it easire to settle.

Personally, I thought of a list of good names, then picked one that sounded kinda normal and stuck with it. Now each time I doubt it I remind myself that people don't
usually chose their names, so I just pretend I didn't either.

I am having the same problem- Dylen, DyLen, Darla, Starla, Dyan, Donna, Dyan....  Oh! what is a girl to do?  I asked my mother but she doesn't remember there being a female name for me.  Funny, she remembers how my sisters got theirs.    The SO thought I would go with Dora.  What?

I was having the same thoughts! I almost wrote a blog post about it. I had gotten used to thinking of myself as "Angela" for years. Now, however, I just don't think it fits anymore. I guess I outgrew it? *sort of shrugs*

I was going to go with "Rachel," as I like the name, but I settled on "Allison" since 1) it doesn't sound terrible with my legal last name (which I plan to keep) and 2) its phonetically similar to my birth name.

Neat topic!  :D
