I find it interesting when science supports the Bible.  A couple of years ago scientists finally cracked a 150 year old mystery.  A man by the name of Henry Layard found a clay tablet in the remains of the Royal Palace at Ninevah.  It had some etchings on it but about half of it was gone.  It is called by some the Assyrian Planisphere because the tablet was created by a Syrian but based on the original account of a Sumerian astronomer.

Recently, scientists input the readable data from the tablet and , with the help of computers, arrived at the conclusion that this tablet was a historical record of a deep space impact that occurred on June 29, 3123 BC.  And from there speculation arose that this impact could have been what destroyed Sodom and Gomor'rah.  Some speculated it could have created the Dead Sea and others thought it could have been responsible for the Great Flood.

Planisphere Story on FOX

As I researched this further I found a lot of data supporting the existence of craters in Israel, Jordan and southern Saudi Arabia.  I recently found there is a crater in India that could be linked to this event.

The first three crater locations and the landslide in Austria all fall in a straight line.  But the dating of each event has been all over the place.

The Wabar Craters in southern S.A. was originally dated around 7500 years ago.  That was later moved up to 5500 years ago.  The USGS surveyed the site and said it could have been as recent as 150 years ago.  The problem with that is the ejectile created from this impact would have been substantial and I cannot find any historical records of an impact of that proportion having taken place then.  Jeffrey Wynn and Gene Shoemaker calculated that the incoming object weighed more than 300 tons and released the energy equivalent of at least 1,000 tons of exploding TNT.  I'm sure if it was as recent as 300 years ago someone would have written something about it.  However, archeologists have said dating impact events in the desert is very difficult.

The destruction from the impact in Israel is said to have had the potential to vaporize about 120 cubic miles of water.  This might explain how the water level of the Dead Sea was quickly reduced to 1300 feet below sea level. Salt raining down would increase the salt concentration of the remaining water to a brine solution (about 20 per cent salt) as it is today. Landfill from the Great Crater might have shut off the Red Sea from the Dead Sea.

The destruction from the impact told in the Assyrian Planisphere would have included temperatures on earth as high as 400 C (725 F) and would have covered an area as large as 1,000,000 SqK.

So the next time you find yourself reading Genesis, imagine the author telling the story of the aftermath of something that caused all this destruction.  It certainly fits the bill.

There were many cataclismic events during and after Genesis was written. I'm curious if a meteor helped formed the Grand Canyon. Though scripture doesn't go into any great detail or mention it, I don't deny that meteor showers did happen. They happen a lot. I believe that science confirms much of what happened in biblical times and before.

The scientific data is all true.  The theories are still theories.
