"Two Spirits" Tells the Story of a 'Navajo Boy Who Was Also a Girl'

A piece of history that may have been left out of your high school textbooks: before terms like "gay," "lesbian," and "transgender" became part of everyday language in prideful statements and political debates, Native Americans lived together in harmony with tribal members from all sexual identities.

Two Spirits is a documentary that tells the story of Navajo youth Fred Martinez. Fred was nádleehí, or a male-bodied person with a feminine nature. To Navajo tradition, this was considered an honor. However, because he was born in this era, instead of receiving praise, he was murdered.
