The prime minister's office (PMO) on Monday took serious note of the report in HT that exposed scores of surgeries being performed by Indore doctors, promising to convert girls as young as one to five years — apparently with gender ambiguity — into boys. The surgery, known as genitoplasty, is done o n the premise or pretext that these children have internal organs that don't match their external genitalia.

"The PMO has taken note of the serious issues that arise from the story on doctors in Indore turning young baby girls into boys, which appeared under your byline in the Hindustan Times on June 26, 2011," said a senior official in the PMO in a mail to this reporter.

This case seems to be becoming stranger by the day and I just get the feeling that someone is leading politicans up the path.

The original report appeared in an otherwise respect paper, to be later repeated with embellishments in a considerably less respected paper, over seas.

The politicans bite and order an enquiry. The first thing that pops into most people's heads', coruption and coverup, has already appeared in the comments.

The issue seems to be developing into a no-win situation for politicians, with children, wealthy families children, being the stick.

But on a plus side, for right thinking people at least, the issue of gential surgery for children may be brought to a head. At least, at this stage, involving apparent genital deformaty.

Sadly, we will probably need to wait another few years before the equally barbarac and much more frequent practice of male genital mutilation is addressed.
