Celebrating our transgender-focused issue.

Not long ago, if Bay Windows had more than two stories in one issue pertaining specifically to lesbians, some in our community would ask if we had become a "dyke newspaper." It's a mark of our community's progress that we rarely hear that comment anymore. Unfortunately we have been asked on more than one occasion if we are becoming "all '->-bleeped-<-,' all the time" due to our focus on the trans rights bill.

Let me break it down for you: in the eyes of the haters, there ain't much difference between homos, lesbos and ->-bleeped-<-s. A gay man is more likely to be attacked if he appears feminine in any way. A lesbian is more likely to be accosted if she appears masculine in any way. The definition of "feminine" and "masculine" is all in the eye of the beholder.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I'd say, though, that the "question" itself is also a sign of progress. If they weren't asking it before, it's likely because they felt confident the answer was "No".
