First I moved this off the Spirituality Board since it was off topic.
Quote from: Cindi Jones on February 16, 2007, 12:07:17 AMYou know, it is the only time in my life when I've seen young people en masse working to make a change in the way the world works. Fortunately, spitting at soldiers didn't last long.... We soon figured out that they were people too. And they all protested together. Believe it or not, I believe that the hippie generation made more advances in human rights than any other in history.
I have to agree with you about the changes we made back then. But of course we were the "us" generation rather than the "me" generations that have followed. I often wonder what it would have been like if Bobby had been elected rather than shot. And as far as protesting together, remember the Vietnam Veterans Against the War? I don't think anybody hated that war more than the people serving in the military at the time.
QuoteI remember my dad condoned the shootings at Kent State saying "they should shoot them all".
My dad felt the same way. Of course he was career Army so his feelings were (sort of) understandable.
QuoteIt's really sad that they grew up to be such right wing bigots!
There used to be an old saying in Political Science classes and among politicians that "If you are not a liberal when you are young, you have no heart. If you are not a conservative as you grow older, you have no brain." I don't think this saying has much merit any longer since conservative now basically equals bigot. Back then, the term conservative denoted someone who was just slightly to the right of center and liberal was just to the left of center. Both still cared more about the people, just in their own way. As the years went by, each side moved farther to the right and left respectively and those of us who tended toward middle of the road were left behind. It became about party politics and more about screwing the "other side of the aisle" rather than what was good for the country. Thankfully the Democratic party has realized this and is trying to move more toward the center again although it's sad that they have given up some things such as equality of marriage. Now if the bigots....sorry I meant Republicans....would just give up on the Theocracy concept, we might all be better off.
But then we still have to remember the words of Mark Twain. "The only time mankind is truly safe is when the legislature is not in session."
