In my opinion, his mother said it best: "If your child has a heart defect you send him to a specialist, but when your child is transsexual, everyone seems to have an opinion."

Whether some people admit it or not, transsexuality is considered an illness - one that can be cured with hormonal treatments and, eventually, surgical processes. If this child grew up feeling more comfortable as a girl, had girlish tendencies, and was terrified when he began puberty, why should his illness not be treated as such?

Allow hormones and therapy (very useful in creating the desired development without sacrificing too much reversibility), but delay surgery (not reversible, nor essential for most social functioning).

That's my gut feeling.
