I distinctly remember reading that even after top surgery, we are supposed to get regular mammograms. I can't remember where I read this, but I was doing some digging today and found no reference to it. I thought I read it on Nick Gorton's health guide, but I just checked, and he only says that pre-mastectomy guys should get screened.

I kept wondering how on earth they can do a mammogram if there's practically nothing left there. Now I'm thinking that I simply misread or misunderstood. I don't often do that, but I guess it's easy to do when you're all torqued up about being trans.  And the clinic I've been going to seems to want mammograms. Heck, maybe THEY misunderstood about my situation; they're kind of slapdash. Next time I go in, I'll reiterate that I am post-surgery.

Anyone know of a reputable source that recommends such screening for post-top-surgery guys? 'Cause I'm sure not finding it now.

I seem to remember reading this somewhere as well.  I don't see how it's possible though (after top surgery).  To the best of my knowledge, non-trans men don't get mammograms.  Monthly breast exams are recommended, though, for both men and women.

If you find any reference to it, let me know.

Men get tumors too.  I had one removed from my right breast when I was about 30.  No Mamogram, but the doctor examined the lump and did surgery to remove it and test it for cancer, it was noncanerous.

I was happy that the breast did grow when I started estrogen.  It is about 1/2 cup smaller than the left breast.

I had to get a pre-surgery physical last week and I asked my normal doctor about this since I had to have a mammo before the surgery and some blood work etc.  She told me I would not have to have any more mammos unless there is a reason to such as feeling a lump, but the standard having it every year or bi-yearly, etc. is not required any more after the top surgery.

From what I understand, mammograms aren't necessary post-op because any tumors or cysts would be a lot easier to spot than if you were pre-op, in which case they could go unnoticed within the breast tissue.

I remember reading that on like, Dr. Garramone's site or some other ftm surgeon site. They recommend it b/c there is still breast tissue left over after surgery.

Cis men have breast tissue too. Women need them since lumps can be hidden in the boob. Men don't since it will be more obvious because there is less tissue.

lol! thats impossible! mammogram is when the two big flat things smash the fat from the top and the bottom right? you CANT do that when you dont have fat there, maybe they meant a physical exam, like a doctor pressing on your chest looking for abnormalities.

Elijah, men can get them done.  They do them here in Minneapolis and the number of men getting breast cancer and having to have mammograms is rising each year.  Here is a video for any who want to see a report for themselves.
