After scaling the heights, playing Shakespeare in his acclaimed one-man show at last year's festival, this year Simon Callow descends into the depths in a lightweight drama where he stars as a transvestite who takes his dad shopping at Tesco on Tuesdays.

Callow is quite a sight. His billiard table legs project from sturdy heels and he wears his M&S skirt like a builder wears his trousers — cinched under his ample belly.

A blonde mop of a wig sits unhappily atop those proud features, and there is a smear of eyeshadow beneath his manly brow.
