Honestly? Anime girls just look really cute or sexy, and a lot of us would like to be identified like that.

That said, I generally prefer western art-styles for females, preferably of the "tastefully clothed" variety.

Anime girls are cute.

lol. I like that.

I love anime. I'm also learning japanese. I'm about a year into it. Lots of japanese anime moves to help me learn the languege.

Maybe they're hoping to find the hot-spring that will change their gender.

Princess Rachel

the only anime character I've ever used as an avatar is Aeon Flux, I tend to pick real live telly and film characters or use pix of myself

Randi

I choose pictures of girls who I would like to look like or have hair the same color or texture as mine. I have considered using an anime character but just haven't done that-can't say that I won't someday.

oh please.... You've got to be Mac user.

*note to administrators. The term Mac user is not demeaning or offensive if it is true. If it is not true, take back my comment as I realise that not all education standards are the same around the world..

The first part of your comment was easily interpreted as jest.  The rest of it confuses me, must be because I prefer android.

Well the internet has a lot of anime fans I guess, but it seems like some anime fans like to get so obsessed with anime (which spills over into an obsession with Japan for some reason) that they end up bringing it with them everywhere they go on the internet. It seems to be the case pretty much anywhere on the internet, as far as I can tell.

Oh well, personally I see it as an art medium like every other. There are good and bad things in most media, like movies, music, books, TV shows, etc. It's weird to say something like "I like anime" or "I like movies" or whatever because you don't like them as a rule, you just like the ones you like. Because what's really interesting is a good story, however it is told. I suppose that anime is a medium which is more happy to mix up gender roles though, which probably appeals to trans people.

So yeah I am not sure if I would say there is much of a link there. More that there is a link there to (especially younger) internet users.

I like my rabbit in a cup, going against the grain of both anime avatars and self-pictures.  :)

I post pix of me in here from time to time, but I use what I use as an avatar because I like the idea of an avatar as opposed to a photo.  A photo is just a photo, but an avatar is a descending (or 'crossing', as always translation is never exact) angel, it is a representation of your power and your aspirations in some way, and used properly says more about you than a photo does.  At least to me.  I've used the one I have up now for years, and before that it was a solo lonely guitar on a stage with stage lighting and an empty house.  But I like the pink girl singing, the fishnets, the boots, the hair ribbon with that kinda scratchy film grain to it.

On Facebook I'm still all about the avatar deal in my profile picture.  I've had the same one there since day one, never changed it, never will.  It's just so me.*  Everyone on my FB is someone I really know real life (it's my little rule) so they all know what I look like, and I'm tagged in a metric ass-ton of pix if they want to punish themselves by looking at them.

As to why the Japanese stuff is so popular here?  Because in a certain age range that stuff is incredibly popular and so it's not just here, I see it all over.  It's just trendy.

* - It's one of these, but one of my own shots of it.

Well in Japan (and actually also Korea, not so sure about China but to some extent too at least), androgynous-looking guys are regarded as cute... which may be why so many are androgynous in animes too!

This is straight from a fashion magazine I bought yesterday:

And I'd say around a quarter of the guys that appeared in the magazine looked something like that so it's fairly common. There are many other more typically masculine-looking guys in the magazine, but none of them look macho.

Yeppers! And, fashion is following as well. I've seen some fashion websites with boys wearing skirts. Apparently it's popular in some countries.  :eusa_eh:

As for the anime thing, my first avatar on here was anime because it was the most eye pleasing of the stock avatars I found on here lol. And I think for others it could also be that most of the anime characters used are very cute.

Pretty much, go to just about any Internet forum and there will be anime avatars.

Generally when I use an avatar of a character from an anime or a TV show I pick a character I like because I can see some of my own personality in them. Like how I'm using Rarity now.

Yeah ikr lol. I was watching bleach last saturday and they had this character on there named charlotte coolhorn & she was a she-male! I think?  :D

Oh, you should check out some of the more recent One Piece episodes.

QuoteFrom wikipedia... Another character, Emporio Ivankov (aka Iva) is the "Queen" of Kamabakka Queendom (Kamabakka literally means "full of ->-bleeped-<-s") and possess the powers of the "Horu Horu no Mi" devil's fruit, which grants the user the ability to create and control special hormones that can affect anyone they strike by however the user desires. One of his techniques is Emporio Onna Hormone (エンポリオ・女ホルモン, literally translated as Emporio Female Hormone) which are special female hormones that when injected into a male, causes said male (including Iva himself) to be transformed complete into a female (Iva uses it to change the sex of male opponents and even himself to female).
