So today I made a big leap and bought myself a car. Nothing spectacular, and the thing is older than I am, anyways, does anybody know if I could possibly have my name on my license/permit be my preferred name, not birth one, and then my gender rather than sex? Because on my application it says gender, but when my drivers ed teacher showed us how to fill out the forms, he said sex, so I'm rather confused. Thanks a bunch! 

It varies state to state.  You will have to check laws where you live.  I'm going to say the name is probably a no, but depending on where you live you may be able to get an M on you license. 

Government issued ID has to reflect what is on your birth/social security documents.

Very true, although if you live in a state where you can change your gender marker with just a therapist letter or chest surgery then it may not be the same as on your birth certificate if they require something else.

Only pointing that out because where I currently live requires chest surgery to change my license but my birth state requires GRS to change my birth certificate.

This.  Also, some are unable to get their birth certificates amended.  But it may be possible to change their DL.  For example, in Idaho BC cannot be amended but DL can with a surgeon's letter.  Tennessee is the same way with no BC but DL with surgeon's letter.  Ohio is similar, accepting a letter from a physician or therapist (without needing surgery).

Depends entirely on your location, although the name thing is out of the question. It has to list your legal name.

Where I live (BC, Canada) you can get the gender marker changed if you have a doctor's note saying you're being treated for "Gender Identity Disorder" so maybe your state/location has the same policy.
