An off-duty D.C. police officer charged with firing a pistol at three transgender women and two male friends last Friday was in handcuffs Tuesday morning as marshals led him into court for a preliminary hearing.

D.C. Superior Court Chief Judge Lee F. Satterfield, who is presiding over the case, granted a request by an attorney representing Officer Kenneth Furr to postpone the hearing until Friday, adding to the suspense surrounding an incident that has outraged LGBT activists and city officials, including Mayor Vincent Gray.

Probable cause found that off-duty cop fired gun at trans women

By Lou Chibbaro Jr. on September 5, 2011

http://www.washingtonblade.com/2011/09/05/probable-cause-found-that-off-duty-cop-fired-gun-at-trans-women/

A D.C. Superior Court judge on Sept. 2 ruled that prosecutors established probable cause that an off-duty D.C. police officer committed an assault with a dangerous weapon for allegedly firing a pistol at three transgender women and two male friends during an Aug. 26 incident in Northwest Washington.

Judge Ann O'Regan Keary ordered Officer Kenneth Furr, a 21-year veteran on the force, held without bond pending his trial. Keary said evidence presented by police and prosecutors showed that releasing the officer would pose a danger to the community.

Probable cause for what?
I really dislike the title of the article its very misleading.

I do wonder why you would follow someone that just pointed a gun at you.

Someone in the car admitted to smoking pot the previous day...and this has any affect on that situation how?

It sounds like this officer has has issues in the past. Maybe he will actually be on the punitive end of things this time. At least the judge isn't comfortable with him running around.

I think the probable cause is the cop stood on the hood of the car and fired at the victims inside.  It's probable he is a transphobe 'cause he shot at unarmed citizens at point blank range.
When you judge others, you do not define them, you define yourself.

In a criminal proceeding, one does not go direct from arrest to trial.  Probable cause has to be found by the Court that the elements of the crime have been properly alleged.  If they are not contained in the charging instrument (often the Complaint), then the case gets kicked then and there, subject to being refiled if PC can be made at a later date.

Somewhere down the road, the case would likely be presented to a grand jury.  Exception there being if someone enters into a plea to the Complaint and indictment was waived (happens all the time).

All that is happening here is someone chose to report on proceedings that take place EVERY day in courtrooms ALL ACROSS AMERICA.

Thanks for the clarification.  :) I would just prefer that the title included which direction probable cause was oriented.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Worm told D.C. Superior Court Judge Ann O'Regan Keary at a felony status hearing Nov. 4 that the government is close to offering a plea deal to Metropolitan Police Department Officer Kenneth Furr for allegedly shooting at a car containing three transgender women and two other individuals in the city's Sursum Corda neighborhood.

[...]

Worm and Furr's lawyer, Harold Martin, told Keary they were trying to negotiate a deal and asked Keary to schedule another felony status hearing for Nov. 18. Worm said that a plea deal will have been extended to Furr by that date, though it may not by formally entered.

The U.S. government's case against Kenneth Furr, the Metropolitan Police Department officer who allegedly shot at a group of five people in a car, including at least two transgender women, in the city's Sursum Corda neighborhood in August, was delayed further Dec. 19 when both Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Worm and Furr's defense lawyer, Harold Martin, asked Judge Ann O'Regan Keary for a continuance.

A D.C. Superior Court judge on Jan. 27 scheduled an arraignment in March for a D.C. police officer charged with firing his gun while off duty at three transgender women and two male friends while the five sat in a car on a city street last August.

Court observers say the decision to schedule an arraignment indicates negotiations between prosecutors and the attorney representing Officer Kenneth Furr over a plea bargain offer have been unsuccessful. Furr is now expected to be indicted by a grand jury within the next several weeks.
