Clockwork Orange was of course filmed in Thamesmead (South East London) which does have a bit of a reputation to be honest! As a South Londoner who lives in what is considered a high crime area and where we had a bit of minor rioting I feel perfectly safe. Always best to be street wise and check what's going on around one and of course avoid catching the eye of obvious trouble and then all will be fine. We get shootings, even one ON the ice in the local ice rink, stabbings and so on but it's confined to kids and doesn't feel like a threat.
Of course it's wrong and terrible but it's the price we are paying for a messed up society, high unemployment, massive wealth inequality, poor education, lack of opportunity, racial prejudice, Islamophobia and more. As I previously mentioned elsewhere on this site it's the fault of the policies enacted by a succession of governments since 1979 that have punished the poor and disadvantaged in favour of corporations and the well off.
The question is: why did people vote them in? The answer is in my personal opinion ignorance, selfishness, greed and the delusion that they could drag themselves up the ladder. The ladder of property and that of social class.
Karl Marx may, and it's a big may, have got things wrong as far as Communism goes but he hit the nail on the head as regards economics. Capitalism in it's present form has no future and what we will have to endure in its death throws doesn't bear thinking about. Hard times are with us now and worse, far worse is coming. In my opinion we are heading towards a form of Neo Fascism where corporations will run nations and there will be perpetual war and the demonisation of the "other". In recent times that has been the "communists" and now it has become Islam. Of course all of us here are in one way or another "others" in the eyes of the majority whether or not we accept that reality. As such we should try to be tolerant and strive against oppression of minorities and for greater social justice. Insha'Allah

we will find the strength to make this a better world.
