Takako Shimura is one of my favorite Manga writers, Aoi Hana is also good if you are into Yuri, and boku wa onna no ko.
Too bad the Anime is so short versus the Manga, it really doesn't have the time to do character building that the Manga does.
I'd bet that it was made shorter than the manga because of marketing. If you love the anime, then maybe you'll check out the Manga. I have seen the manga somewhere and flicked through it but I didnt get to read much. It might have been books-a-million.
The main character's appearance reminded me of myself when I was that age. my hair was styled the same too. Only my school uniform was somewhat different from the rest of the boys, in that I wore a blue cardigan with a teddy bear on the left breast, whereas the boys all wore sweaters. My mum even made me wear tights, though I somehow doubt it was a forced issue for me

I was pretty short too, even in high school. it was kind of funny because I hung out with the tallest kid in the school and there was such a height difference between us.
Then there was a girl who was the same height who used to argue that she was taller because her hair stood higher. I never did fall in love with a boy or try to kiss one, I had enough issues by then with everyone thinking I was gay without giving them unfounded proof.
I also had to do the crossdress play. It was terrifying to me because years before that I had been caught by my dad wearing my friend's white pleated skirt when I was playing at her house. And he teased the crap out of me. I didn't want to be one of the Ladies Dancing in The 12 Days of Christmas because I didn't want to be teased again. I was a pretty sensitive child back then. I'd cry when I got picked or teased or when I was being punished by my Mum and dad. But, my Aunt did tell me I was very cute and Very headstrong, so at least that hasn't changed.
