Hello everyone!

I was just thinking about this the other day, and wanted to ask what people are doing for Halloween and what costume ideas are floating around.

My idea was Alice in Wonderland.  Since I have not officially "come out" to most people I know, this might be kind of awkward at a party, but it's the top of my list anyway.

I seem to be exceedingly boring. I'll go with the costume I've used for the past few(5+?) years ... none at all. I might use the occasion as an excuse to get my ears pierced though. *shrug*

Oh Kimberly, what shall we do with you.  You don't need an excuse to get your ears pierced  :-*

But I must admit that I too don't do anything special for Halloween.  Actually we live in a great spot for scary stuff.  We are the only house for miles, no street lights.  There's a big old church to the left and a small lonely grave yard to the right.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooh scuse me while i go and lock all the doors and windows.  :icon_eek:

I thought I should have explained that when I drafted it initially.
The excuse of the event is convenient to explain why my mother's son is getting 'his' ears pierced to other people.

;) As I have said before, I see no reason to give other people reasons nor excuses.

Halloween is my favorite holiday. And believe me I go all out, Fog machines lights,Phumatic doors, windows, and ghosts that come out of the ground.
Voted best decorated house two years in a row.
But because of all this I just dress in a grim reaper outfit to blend in to the dark so I can operate the effects with out being seen to much.
And stephanie your house would be a blast to Decorate
If i had the nerve I always wanted dress as a cheerleader.

Yes, nothing keeps the ghosts out better than a locked door.  ;)

(Sorry couldn't resist!)

I guess that makes for a grave situation...

Did you hear about the wizard mortician?
His favorite magic word is Abbra-cadaver...

If I recall right, didn't our idea of Halloween / Trick-or-treat come from Ireland?

The druids sensed a great evil was coming out of the mountains and was looking for a town to possess and demand tribute.  The druids said the only way to keep the towns safe was to make it look like it was already possessed.  The, the townspeople made the village look as frightening as possible, including carving turnips and putting candles in them.  The druids said that it wasn't enough, that the townspeople had to make themselves look like they were evil spirits to show that the town was already possessed.  Then the costumed townspeople went door to door demanding tribute, also showing that other spirits had taken possession of the town.

The druids then said that this tradition had to happen every year come the harvest to keep evil from taking possession of the village.

Patrick, being the wise bishop that he was, realized that this was to end this tradition would be impossible.  What he WAS able to do was to move it so that it came the night before All Saint's Day.  So trick-or-treat comes on All's Hallowed Eve – Halloween.

Nice history lesson, Chaunte,

I'm wondering if anyone has Mischief Night as part of a tradition amongst the young punks in town where you live?

I grew up in a suburban neighborhood in NJ, and the night before Halloween was deemed 'mischief night' for as long as I could recall.  It was dominated by teenagers, who would go out and toilet paper trees, throw raw eggs in mail boxes, soap car windows, smash people's pumpkins in the street.... (which always makes me sad, to see such things destroyed)

The police were always out and extra vigilant on mischief night.  Homeowners would bring in their jack-o-lanterns and other fall decorations for the evening to avoid them being broken or stolen.  That always struck me as odd, how the 'victims' of mischief night had to accomodate to a night of riff-raff.  I had one neighbor though who would lie in ambush after dark and spray any offenders with a powerful blast from the water hose! I do think in latter years the police enforced a curfew on mischief night.

I've not noticed any such thing since moving to Florida, which I'm glad for...but then again every day here people are being robbed or assaulted, sooo....

No Halloween costume for me this year, at least, none that I'm planning on as of yet....

Well I don't know about the Trick-or-Treat tradition, but the holiday was ripped off from the pagan holiday Samhain, when it is said the veil between the two worlds is thin and allowed connections and travel between them.  Celebrations involving divination (speaking with the deceased) are held for seven days up to Samhain.

EDIT - sorry didn't mean to use the past tense here, since these are practices that are very much still happening today.  My brother-in-law and hs wife are wiccan and educated me on many subjects.

I will be out on Samhaim to set up the altar, cast a circle, and do my little bit to say goodbye to the God for just a little bit.

Well I may have to rethink my costume.  I went out looking with my sister today, and the only Alice in Wonderland costumes we could find were of the "exotic dancer" variety.  What is up with retail halloween costumes for women all looking like something a stripper would feel naked in?

I might have to try making my own.  Except for the wig, I should be able to get traditional clothing for the job.
