my first school year as a guy

School has been back for a little over a week and I'm loving it. I'm being gendered correctly. I'm a guy. (Second year of university. I know it's mostly a younger crowd here, I think.)

I had my first choir rehearsal last Monday. It was hard, because I'm not used to my singing voice yet. Singing in a group is different from singing alone, not only because I couldn't hear myself very well. I don't know my voice well enough to sing by feel yet, so when the group of 85 people were singing I was hitting a lot of wrong notes at first just because I couldn't tell what note I was singing. Before my voice changed, it was like I naturally knew where my voice was. I hope that comes back with practice.

I went from Soprano 1 to Bass 1. The highest female voice to almost the lowest male voice. (The only one lower in my choir is Bass 2, but most of the time we're singing the same notes, it's just when the bass part splits the Bass 2 take the lower note)

In an hour I am going to the university to audition for this year's plays. They're doing The Importance Of Being Earnest and Twelfth Night.

I don't think there's a part for me in IOBE because I look pretty young. I'm 27 but I look about 17. I'm auditioning anyway for the experience. I'm really hoping for a part in Twelfth Night though. I'm hoping for Feste, the clown. Or Sebastian, Viola (the girl who dresses as a guy)'s twin brother.

The important thing is, I'm auditioning for plays as a guy. I am so excited, this is my first time auditioning for male roles and I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like.

Wish me luck!

I am so happy for you! Livin' the dream, man.  ;D

I left theater as a teen because they started giving me female roles, so it stopped being fun. I'm kinda thinking about getting back into it after I transition. You've given me some hope there.  :)

same. in elementary school i was in a program that did plays and i always got the good male parts. in middle school that changed so i stopped doing plays all together. i was thinking of starting up agan as male but i really dont have the talent. theater in my school is competitive.

Thanks. I'll let you guys know if I was cast soon, I find out sometime on Sunday.

I think I got put in the Bass section simply because I can't sing high enough to be a tenor. This is my most recent singing clip: http://www.jenny-jackson.com/dustinthewindsept1.mp3

Hey, congratulations man.  Hope it goes well for you.  I looove the Importance of Being Earnest. ;D

Me too! I got to be Algernon in high school one year, randomly. It was more of a radio production read-through than an actual play, but oh well. I was so stoked. I was a C-cup and had hair down past my shoulder blades at the time, but regardless, I made a damned good English fop if I do say so myself.

I just got word that I didn't get a part in either of the plays, but I will probably work on the tech crew. Choir was easier this week too, I didn't have to re-learn my voice again. I was able to sing the correct notes right from the beginning. Tomorrow I have my first singing lesson as a male.

I'm also not going to let not getting a part in the plays get me down. I'm going to audition for another play and the musical this week.
