Well I'm currently in my last year of high-school, so I decided it is about time I got a job...

I was about to start typing up a resume since I found a couple of places that are looking for applicants, and they only ask for a resume and cover letter.

But I was wondering if I can just put my name as (initial) "preferred name" (last name) or even just a shortened version of my first name that sounds more male and my last name, or if putting my name like that would cause me any trouble?

Also I pretty much pass all the time so I wouldn't have to out myself to anyone I don't think... Or would it be better if I did anyways?

First time applying for jobs so I just really don't know. :S

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

When applying for a job, it's important that you use your legal name and if they ask about your sex or gender, you need to put the legal one - not what you prefer. It's important to do it this way, because potential employers often perform a background check - and if you do get hired, they'll require to see a Social Security card (They'll copy it) and if the names don't match, this could cause you problems.

But there's nothing wrong with telling them your preferred name after you get hired, or during an interview.

He's right. When you do your resume though you could also list your preferred name on there like below it. I did that and got hired still. The person doing the interview noticed it and sorta asked "so you prefer to go by Drew" casually and it gave me a great way to bring up my being trans without having to make a big deal about it.

Social security no longer doing gender checks was the way I understood it.  A first initial followed by a preferred name in quotes is fine on a resume. Use a legal name and then preferred name in quotes on an application.

Your original application for a drivers license will have no bearing on what your employer sees. Not even a name change.

maybe i can help since i have applied to jobs in the past as a girl but with a legal male status.

If the application does not state "legal" name then put in our preferred name. In the background check of the application, put your legal name.

You will always get an interview before they pay for a background check. Do our interview like normal. Once you ace your interview then explain the legal status of your background check along with your name.

State it matter of factly. Give them your legal name and let it be that. Don't fumble around and try to give multiple excuses. Just let your yes be yes and your no be no.

I have applied at two jobs and gotten both jobs before my name was legalized and these were in the mall.

The key is to be confidant and discuss your legal situation as if it is no big deal. If you start to squirm so will your interview.

Now that I'm back on the job market, I've been looking for a way to deal with that issue, and this seems like a great idea. Thanks Drew!  :)
