We all know that newspapers decide which ads they'll run and which ads are inappropriate, right? Well a rather misguided ad was allowed to run in Canada's National Post today. This is just sad.

That's a shame. For the most part I've thought Canada to be a fairly accepting place to live. I hope the repercussions of allowing this ad will make them think twice about posting any similar ads or articles in the future.

I wonder what they'll say if the kid is any of the cases listed?
And is using her photo a form of child abuse?
"Don't ask me, it was on fire when I lay down on it"

The social conservatives already believe that ->-bleeped-<-, so it isn't going to change them at all. But it shows everyone else just how toxic that newspaper, and that side of politics, has become. I'm actually kind of happy that ad is there. Might wake people up to who exactly they are voting for these days. The progressive conservatives are dead, and all that's left are these psychos.

Shocking that the ad was allowed. The far right gets scarier every year, never imagined we would be living in such a world in 2011.

Their choice of fonts is downright criminal too, looks like Comic Sans on Acid. ::)

I'm particularly disturbed by the inclusion of intersexed in there. Has the umbrella of hate expanded to cover them as well? Are they suggesting children with ambiguous genitalia or Klinefelter's or androgen insensitivity don't exist? I can grasp people not understanding internal aspects of identity like being trans, but when you're talking about something that can be easily medically verified that is a whole new level of ignorance.

Shocking that the ad was allowed.

Of course, that's exactly what they are saying about the curriculum.  Congratulations, you're just like them.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

The National Post is pretty much like FOX News North, but even considering that, I'm still shocked. This ad is racist too because Two Spirit is a very important part of some Indigenous cultures in Canada and the USA.

Following a link in another post, it seems the National Post has made a complete apology for running this advertisment.

http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/09/30/an-apology-from-the-national-post/

QuoteEarlier this week the National Post ran an advertisement that has caused some controversy. The ad, bought by the Institute for Canadian Values, argued against aspects of the Ontario school curriculum that include instruction about certain aspects of human sexuality. Specifically, it objected to teaching young children — those between junior kindergarten and Grade 3 — about transsexual/transgender/intersexed/two-spirited issues.

The National Post has procedures in place for vetting the content of advertising, especially advocacy advertising. The procedures are intended to ensure that such ads meet a standard of tone and respect that is consistent with furthering constructive dialogue about important public policy issues.
In this case, those procedures were not followed. An ad that should not have run in its proposed form was allowed to run.

This ad will not run in the National Post again.

I'd call this a major result.  :)

UPDATE: Egale will not disclose donation amount

TORONTO NEWS / National Post had donated money after publishing transphobic ad

Andrea Houston / Toronto / Monday, August 13, 2012

http://www.xtra.ca/public/National/UPDATE_Egale_will_not_disclose_donation_amount-12411.aspx

UPDATE, Aug 28
-- Helen Kennedy, executive director of EGALE, will not reveal the amount the National Post donated to the LGBT rights organization after the newspaper pulled the "Stop Corrupting Children" ad it ran in September 2011 during the Ontario election campaign.

Kennedy says she does not want to breach the tacit privacy agreement between Egale and its donors.

"I'm not in a position to reveal what individual donations were to Egale," she says. "If you donated to Egale in trust, would you want that given to a paper?

That bit jumped out at me too.  I would guess they were confused as to the difference between "intersexed" and "genderqueer".

It's good to see the paper eventually did the right thing.  Maybe there is hope for humanity.
Living in interesting times since 1985.
