SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Transgender inmates who did not begin treatment prior to entering federal custody can now receive hormones, specialized mental health counseling and possibly gender reassignment surgery while they are in prison, according to new rules adopted by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons as part of a court settlement.
A May 31 memo issued to wardens at the nation's 116 federal prisons and made public by gay rights groups in announcing the settlement Friday states, "current, accepted standards of care" will be applied to inmates who believe they are the wrong gender.
Under the bureau's previous policy, issued in 2005, only federal inmates with a preexisting diagnosis were eligible for transgender-related care, which was limited to treatments that would maintain them "only at the level of change which existed when they were incarcerated."

AWESOME! I cant wait to possibly have my SRS paid for by the taxpayer!
I mean if I'm going to have to pay for someone else's surgery I should be able to have mine done the same way. Right?
I'm all for everything but the SRS. If we can't get it done on taxpayers money, why should prisoners be given preferential treatment?
I always thought that you went to prison for doing something wrong as a punishment.

Well that's true dear , but Imagine your in prison and you starting to grow a bear but you got breast live with that for years its terrible.
anyways I think for how bad their actions were they still deserve to be who they want to be and since there prisoners they need the help of the people there so thats why.. anyways I'm sure they will have to paid those SRS by working in cafeteria or something , so I do not think its free.
anyways I'm happy out here hehe don't want to go to prision to check that out.. !

Imagine this: At the federal level before, you could have had breasts and all - looked completely like a woman and had to suffer through continued rape attempts until that wore off, they take away your HRT, you lose your hair, you grow a beard, you get hairy, you begin to masculinize in total. You are stuck in solitary... Alone, a prisoner of your body in a federal prison, prisoner of the mental and physical torment caused by repeated abuses by guards and other prisoners, prisoner for LIFE, whatever that is. Prison for trans inmates is cruel and unusual. Prison was never supposed to be all punishment. Do you think they really wanted to subjugate people to that Hell without trying to get them on a track that would keep them out when they were released?

I'm going to check out the link.

Every year, hundreds, maybe thousands, of innocent people are incarcerated. Sometimes later evidence comes forth that exonerates them, sometimes it doesn't. Regardless, people in prison are human beings, too, and I see no reason they shouldn't be treated as such. Now, an exception for mass/serial murderers, rapists, and pedophiles? That would be ideal in my mind.

Actually there are a lot of trans people that are free and get poor treatment in our society.

I paid for my counseling, meds, electroysis, orchi and any future work.

Transitioning cost me my job, most likely my best friend of thirty years, most likely my home, many of my friends, most of my financial resources and I was at one time liked by many who met me.  People still tend to like me if they chat with me.

My feelings about big government are clear.   Cut government in half.

I think giving meds and chatting with counselors are OK for prisoners but that's it.  No free GRS or FFS.  Probably need trans inmates protected.  If I went to prison I guess I have to go in male prison with my big breasts.

Anyway, I can imagine growing a beard and have breasts. I only have to look in the mirror when I shave -_- I have no sympathy for a prisoner who made a conscious decision to commit a crime! Besides, When that prisoner got out, their free ride is over. They would have a hard time getting a job because of the stigma of being a criminal...

Meds? okay, fine. Electrolosis? If you have the funds, not with tax dollars. SRS? I draw the line there. If they have the money to do it, fine. But if it comes out of the taxpayer's money, Nuh Uh! no way! With all the crap that we go though just to get that far, you should want to stay out of prison, not be enticed to commit crimes so you can go there. I mean I'm having to save all I can to buy a used car just so I wont have to walk 5 miles in the snow when its winter to get to work. I'm full time and I've had one session of hair removal and until I get a car, I cant get to the place that did it anyway. So why should I be happy that a criminal is allowed access to that kind of care when I'm out here busting my butt off making the  money that the government rapes me on in the first place? And there are others on here who have it way worse than I do.

I love how everyone for this crap always cites this bs as if it justifies the whole thing.

So lets get this straight...  You are willing to let the COUNTLESS people who did commit actual crimes get tv, medical aid, outside food sources, healthy prison foods, chances at getting out sooner, the ability to get away with giving a guard aids, and more all on MY bill.  Just so the FEW and make no mistake about that the EXTREME MINORITY that do get put in on a bad trial can get aid?  You willing to let the countless transgender people outside that need aid where the money -COULD GO- or just to help people in general -OBEYING THE LAWS-  get nothing?  Money that could help pay off our nations debt, create other jobs, etc.

It doesn't matter that they are -human beings- they made the choice to commit the acts that led them inside there.  They decided that their selfish pigheaded jackass desires were important then anyone else's on this stupid rock.  They cheated that man out of money to feed his kids, mentally scarred someone for life, installed a constant fear in an area of the world so children can't play outside, by proxy helped ruin a mothers life by selling her drugs, and far worse.  These people ruin lives and you do not have to murder someone to do it.

A jail is supposed to be a -PUNISHMENT- and just because the system isn't perfect.  You should not reward the countless people out there every day ruining life for all of those just trying to get by day to day.  Just because of the off bits that a few innocents made it in.  There is no perfect system but there is what we have and right now due to people like you?  A vast majority of those inside get a free card to get whatever they need done in a few short years before walking free and all the innocent people -OUTSIDE- get to fit the bill for their evil.  Ya, a few short years because only the huge crap ever gets you close to a long or full sentence.

So if you want to donate a MASSIVE part of your stinking check for them and let the rest of sign off fine.  However right now?  Stop being selfish and asking the rest of us to do it.

Guess what? If you live in the U.S., you're already doing that. You pay your taxes, right? Because if you don't, you'll get to join all those people you obviously abhor. And guess what else? They're not going to re-route that money to help those of us who aren't criminals. Why? THEY DON'T CARE.

I've read articles detailing trans people who commit crimes just to get back into prison. They felt as though they were too excluded from the legal economy. In some cases, trans people are in there because they had to steal (or hook) to eat.

Crazy stuff.

You shouldn't. You should be livid that you have to go to prison in order to get the coverage you need and the kind of care you deserve. I love that they have it. I'm thinking of writing someone that can help get us the same coverage.

I really don't agree with you about the no sympathy for criminal thing, though. I have worked with criminals, grown up with gang members...

Absolutely, there is an article in today's Independent newspaper estimating that the US prison population of 2,000,000 plus there are estimated to be between 40,000 and 100,000 completely innocent people locked up behind bars. Add to that 25% of the Black population is either in prison or on probation and one struggles to comprehend how deeply flawed a society can be. They do not care because nobody holds them responsible or speaks out.  We just get people like you that go to extremes to speak their voice on things like this online and elsewhere.  You will put more into this then ever seeking term limits for political positions of high power, lowering their salaries, or getting that money spoke of actually rerouted.  Hell, I'd rather see the government squander it then them get it but sadly there is loads of bleeding hearts just like you.  So all those whiny voices make sure all the nasty people get better stuff then those of us obeying the laws.

Well out of order.

Do you not see the irony of attacking disadvantaged people and their human rights and do you not wonder why your country has not only the highest incarceration rate in the developed world but the highest in the entire world.

I agree, Tekla. Only your people can change the way things are and hopefully one day they will. It is in the interest of all, Americans and otherwise.
