I've seen real cowboys. Fred wouldn't last 1 round with a real cowboy (I'm not talking the Dallas Urban-Cowboy type that drives a pickup and lives his whole life thinking he needs to prove he's a man by fighting and drinking and being a bigot - I'm talking the people that actually, you know, raise cows).
Fred is just a bigotted and bitter manipulator (his goal is to get Americans to pay his salary by either suing a city when they violate his 1st amendment rights or getting punched by a counter-protester and then suing the city for not protecting him when they knew he was at risk of attack). That's how he gets his money to drive around protesting funerals. Counter protests just give him publicity and increase the chances he'll have of a successful lawsuit (the exception to this is the counter protests that take place at funerals at the request of the deceased person's family - that serves a very vital purpose of providing support when people most need it).
I also agree that few people can bring people together like Phelps. I've seen the most unlikely of pairings thanks to him. He shows people what is wrong with bigotry, and does it in a much more clear way than the "moderate" people who seem respectable to too many people - the people who are actually dangerous (you know, the "hate the sin, love the sinner, see me smile about how caring I am" types).
