It's stereotypically gothic, tends to be cheap, and negates someone's fear of the dark that occurs at night time.

Hmmm... to the dark...  Does it have some sort of pattern on it? A spiderweb pattern perhaps? Or is it used in some spiritual/pagan/seance type thing(not equating those, just lumping the words together)?
Perhaps you could give a hint other than just talking about how the candle has to do with the dark.

A nightlight? A pumpkin? A blindfold?
