Google's AdWords confuses transgender terms with teen porn

Bay Area transgender, sex-positive queer-porn site Red Handed Porn signed up as a client of the AdWords service, only to discover that finding AdWords-approved words to describe their brand (and potential clients' brand identity) meant choosing terminology deeply offensive to most transgender individuals. At the same time, they found that terms chosen as respectful self-labels by the trans culture were rejected by AdWords as -- shockingly -- "teen porn concepts." What's more, Red Handed found that even the term "dyke" is considered a four-letter word by the service, while terms that deeply offend trans women are accepted. (Unfortunately, Google did not respond to my request for comment for this piece.)

I ran into this myself. I wanted to place the following ad on adwords to boost the visiblity of the site somewhat...

Susan's Place
Safe & Clean Transgender Support
with Chat, Forums, Links, and Wiki
www.susans.org

Google has the following to say about it.

Keyword Transsexual  Inactive for search.

I contacted them about it they say it's their right to determine what keywords they wish to allow adwords on. I said I run a transsexual support site. They said the same thing. So, I said fine, you won't make any money from me then. Until they change the policy to allow non-pornographic use of the transsexual keyword then I will not do business with them. It's costing them at least 30$ per month. They will bend on this before I will so it's their choice.

I can't stand the way we are subjected to the stereotypes of certain words by the media.

I am in triple jeopardy.

Transsexual means I'm a prostitute, in the porn industry or want to fondle little boys.

Hacker means I commit crimes and/or am a terrorist.

Being an Anti-Prohibitionist means I am a drug dealer, I want everyone to use drugs and I also want to get all your kids high and kill em.

None of these things are true and it's been a very tough fight.

I'm sure I'm on some government list somewhere.

I noticed the Google Adwords wanting to associate transsexual with ->-bleeped-<- superstar porn not too long ago.  I thought perhaps it was fluke of the page but I guess not.

Hacker, the term was corrupted by the media and hollywood and I can no longer say in an interview I used to be a hacker because they immediately think script kiddy site destroyer.  We tried fighting against it, you can see how well that has worked so far.

Let's see, past associations:
Into the occult because I read comic books (no lie, was on one of the religious programs)
A Satanist because I played Dungeon and Dragons
Going to hell for playing paintball (that came straight from a nun, she stated I was glorifying war)
