This is a local story to me.

I realize this is a zoning code violation, but it's like we're being deterred from using alternative fuels! Kinda irritates me.

Hats off to this guy for being in the spirit for what a lot more of us should be doing! Saving the environment and being less reliant on  big pollutants that come from oil and gas.

QuoteHe was fined $2,000, and he can no longer filter in his home. According to the judge, Leeder lives in a commercial zone, and filtering is only allowed as an industrial use. Leeder said he feels he's being unfairly targeted and cannot afford to pay the fine by the March 27th due date.

"Justice had her eyes closed over there in that trial as far as I'm concerned. Or, she had something in her eyes or blinked or something because this is the just the craziest thing I've ever heard. Filtering vegetable oil is a crime?" Leeder said.

The village said it doesn't care if Leeder filters the oil, but he just has to do it in an appropriate zone. Leeder said the Jefferson County Court system will be reviewing his case in the form of an appeal.

It just goes to show.... if you are doing anything "off the grid", don't tell anyone about it.

He's not making fuel for pete's sake, he's FILTERING it! If you know anything about this process, that's exactly what it is.  He's just getting the french fries out of it (and perhaps putting in an additive (sorta like an STP type thing)). Now, you may realize that every car filters its fuel before injecting it into the engine, so we are ALL guilty of doing the same thing that he is doing.

This is totally unreal.

There is more to processing waste vegetable oil than running it through a screen filter.  It can involve solvents and during part of the production, the would be fuel can be very corrosive.  In addition other elements that can be used such as ethanol may fall under federal guidelines and require permits.

And it does look like he's got some equipment in his back yard which spoil the neighbor's view!  ;)

In the year 2100, we will all be filtering automobiles in order to make vegetables. An act which the corporate government will consider treason.

So, STOP! and THINK! before you break the law.   :police:

This response is tongue in cheek and is not meant to offend [the corporate government of the future].

Peace,

Yes.. We've had the same thing around here.. People filling up their cars with clear veg oil, the stuff you could buy at the supermarket, for 19 cents per litre.
Of course; this has become illegal, but only because DIESEL COSTS OVER FOUR TIMES THIS AMOUNT OF MONEY!
It's all about the corporates, I'm afraid.
This is one of those examples where I want to go completely south-park.
