Thanks for the link!
I find this very very interesting. It seems like Chaz Bono might have done a good job at what he's doing.
I'm kind of glad also that LGBT groups seem to be putting a bit more emphasis on us transgender people, because while even these numbers might seem promising, if you look at the research institute's website and the data collection, you'll find this question and response:
In just a few words, what do you think the word 'transgender' means?
Person who....
39% - Switches from one gender to another (General)
7% - Switches from one gender to another (Surgical/Medical)
10% - Is born the wrong sex/born in the wrong body
9% - Has Identified with both genders
6% - Acts/lives like the opposite gender
5% - Identifies more with the opposite gender
2% - Has different sexual preference/orientation
2% - Has both sexual organs
8% - Other Miscellaneous Reponses
11% - Don't know/Refused
100% Total
Still, it's not quite so bad. If you add the responses of "is born in the wrong body," "Acts/lives like the opposite gender" and "Identifies more with the opposite gender" then that's about 21% or 1 in 5 people who we can basically be certain that know what we are. That's quite a lot more than I ever imagined.
