Was R. Crumb's Rejected New Yorker Cover Transphobic Or Just Classic Crumb?

THE SHOT - R. Crumb's proposed cover for the June 2009 issue of The New Yorker, rejected by editor David Remnick (presumably for the gender inspection sign, though Crumb says that Remnick never offered him any explanation). Gawker's Seth Abramovitch points out:

"...millions of gays and lesbians who would have undoubtedly felt marginalized and stereotyped by the depiction. On the other hand, you need to put the illustration in the context of the illustrator: Crumb's entire career was built on his hypersexualized images of hulking women with lumberjack legs and the scrawny she-men who fawn over them. The picture was celebrating gender-defiance, not mocking it."
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde

I might just be ignorant, but I don't understand why it was transphobic?

I thought the picture was very provocative in challenging the hypocrisy of the marriage extremists.

Cuz the portrait of the later transitioner woman is accurate and she doesn't look like a playboy model.

Unfortunately. Hormones aren't the magic pill if it's trying to change the hulk into wonder woman. That violates the rules of physics.

IMHO, T is an exceptionally damaging drug, and we should do our best to prevent the widespread devastation it causes (hairy back, not hairy skulls, hobbit feet just to name a few.)

I don't care about hair. It's the bone structure....

Some things don't match certain aesthetics.....

Only in my dreams hun.
Literally, she's everything in terms of appearance that I want to be; but at the same time everything that I can never be. (Except for the neon blue hair of course.)

Can a pre-hrt trans woman even look that sexy?

it was transphobic crap that would have lowered New Yorker into gutter with Nat Enq.
E B White would have turned in his cold Penobscot grave to see such a cover.

Who is R Crumb?  Do we need to know or care?

...probably so! Although it is not exactly a page out of, Is Sex Necessary?:Or Why You Feel the Way You Do, it does remain true to form of the artist for whom it appears you are not familiar with. ...cold Penobscot grave indeed...

I don't see a lot of trans phobia here.

Just a guy with a strange fetish and a crude/poor sense of humor.

Everything you need to know about the guy.

He is a self professed misogynist and has a long documented history of work that shows even regular women as freaks.

I don't think it is Crumb being trans/homophobic, just Crumb being Crumb.

Crude/poor sense of humor...hmmm crude okay but "strange" sense of humor is more befitting. Showing regular women as freaks...maybe more exaggerated, muscular, full-sized...pornographic...
