Feinstein's DOMA Repeal Bill Passes Senate Judiciary Committee

California Senator Dianne Feinstein has said she expects a long fight to end the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

DOMA, which was approved in 1996, bars federal agencies and the military from recognizing the legal marriages of gay and lesbian couples.

On Thursday, a bill that would repeal DOMA cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee along a 10-8 party line vote. Republicans on the panel said they supported DOMA because federal recognition of the marriages of gay couples would add to the national debt.

Without commenting on Feinstein and her remark, I will say. It was only 7 years ago that half this nation went to the election booth simply to pull a lever and make sure that them there queers weren't screwin up their marriages by getting married themselves and voting for that catastrophe on legs.

Seven years later every reputable poll shows that the majority of Americans DO support gay marriage and by LARGE majority were happy Don't Ask, Don't Tell was repealed. Say that to folks in 2004 and you would have been laughed off the block.
This country is changing, at least in that one regard, for the better. Keep the Senate out of R control this next election and DOMA might be the next one to fall with a President no longer needing to play it safe and a fresh Senate.

Gays(and LGBT) are just another vote for them. As long as they keep "fighting" we won't get crap done.

Sure, but they've got absolutely no problem with starting wars in every corner of the globe and want to occupy any secured [conquered] territory indefinitely no matter the cost. And never mind the fact that they keep giving your military more money than it asks for (allocating only a tiny bit of that money toward a meager increase veterans' friggin' pay, I might add). They've got no issues with driving the USA into the ground by building jets, tanks, and softskin vehicles the Pentagon doesn't want so they can go back to their home states and beam that they "support" the military [shovel earmarks]. But by God, they'll be damned if even one bit of revenue is lost giving the queers tax breaks through marriage contracts.

It's a serious question I ask to the Americans in the audience: HOW do these people keep getting re-elected?

Just watch the weekly episodes of "The real houswives of the Republican Party"... er I mean the debates. That should cure any sentiments you might have towards a R vote next year.

Don't get me wrong, I think most of the Dems are spineless, gutless and heartless but at least to some extent they still try to maintain the facade of the opposite, the Republicans by and large are actually proud of being those things.

Sad state of affairs either way.

Heaven forbid they stop taking random jet flights, not paying for their meals, gas, cut their super high unneeded paychecks, stopping retarded spending on foreign nations problems, paying back social security that they never should have been allowed to take money from, stop borrowing money from random governments that hate us like china, tax oil companies more, put gas regulations into play, legalize weed to open a new industry with jobs 'n' kill the terrible smoking industry, pass some laws to keep jobs within the country, encourage more companies to put factories in the states, etc etc etc.

Heaven forbid they do the right thing....  Nope... I mean that would totally make the debt worse would be more civil rights for gays, lesbians, and transgendered people.  Clearly a bad call.

-He thinks that your civil liberties are entirely irrelevant, and that the government should be able to arrest you and hold you without charges forever.
-He complains that allowing homosexuals access to federal benefits from marriage contracts would be too expensive, but does not want to argue that heterosexual marriages should be invalidated to balance the books.
-He voted for American military personnel to stay in Afghanistan and Iraq, but voted against giving them more armored vehicles when they expressed a shortage.
-He voted against restricting businesses with known ties to terrorist organizations.
-He has been a Senator since 2002, and a high volume of his constituents (38%) have no opinion either way about him. That's more than 1/3 of Texas.

What are they putting in Texans' water?

For the life of me I will never get Texans' political choices. How Ron Paul represents that State will always be a mystery.

I would like to think that Florida has settled into a happy middle. Than again our budget has problems too. In addition our Gov. should be in the big house, not the state house.

No such place in California.  And Berkeley (it's a college town, so spelling counts), the campus, is pretty conservative these days - as well as historically, they are just tired of 9% tuition increases every year.  Though it does have a very strong liberal arts component it is - as it long has been - primarily a business, math and science school, that has consistently been one of the three cornerstones of the theoretical physics universe.

What got Berkeley that label as being all radical was the Free Speech Movement, that in the beginning was a simple attempt to pass out civil rights literature, but of course thinking that black people had a right to vote is probably crazy to you.

And only Florida has it's own Fark tag, because there is a constant stream of news stories out of there that can really only be summed up as 'only in Florida."

I thought it was the Hispanics, more than the blacks, who CA historically "Jim Crowed"? Part of the bundle that was Brown v. Topeka came from, I believe, Fresno.

Florida is a diverse state.
