i think it's fair to make it optional if it's possible. the reputation system isn't necessary for everyone. it's just other users opinions on your posts which is turned into a status that everyone can see. i think people who have "smites" displayed under their name are judged. i think it would remain fair to make reputation a black or white concept. meaning, you're either completely in it, or you're completely out of it. someone who chooses to be in the reputation system would have all the priviliges of giving and receiving reputation, but still is subject to smites. while someone who opts out can not get any reputation or smites, but cannot give rep to any others.

Reutation points was THE worst thing to happen here.  They are the cause and prolongation of all the niggles at Susan's.

i think lots of people would agree, so they shouldn't be forced to use it. the ones who feel the need to climb the social status ladder should be the only ones who climb or fall.

Frankly, I don't care about reputation.
i will give my opinion, I"ll try to do that as polite and honest as possible.
If people dont like that and smite me....so be it.
If they like it and give applaud....so be it.
It won't have any effect on me to speak freely.
This sounds a bit stubbing, I know but, what is a reputation worth if you don't speak from the heart?

Most regretfully politeness does not work with the rift-raft I think what is worst it is the inability of a minority of vocal beings in respecting other people opinions. They want to silence anybody who disagrees with the stuff they are pandering

i don't see how being allowed to disable your reputation feature is "silencing" someone else. it's only a matter of it being patronizing to have to show your smites under your profile name for certain people. you can look at others and see why someone hated one of their posts. some people don't think that's anyone else's business. btw, of course i want to silence anyone who disagrees with me. i'm very self indulging by nature, and i don't believe in changing myself to gel better with someone else. what return value comes with that? there's a difference between someone who is just different from me and someone who acts as an opposing force against me. i let people have what they earned or take what is rightfully theirs, but i don't approve of letting them take what is rightfully mine. it's this simple, if i know someone does not agree with me no matter what i say, and they act as an opposing force, i won't let them have all their cake and eat it. there's alot of limitation on that.

It will work, I'm not shouting, yelling or curshing, but I will say my opinion no matter the smites or sometimes the harsh words.
Sure, I would like to have it in a intelligent and respectfull way, like normal adults do, but sometimes that's not possible.
One thing is for sure, I will never silenced for someone who has a loud voice, I live in the free western world and I have the right to speak, so I will.
C'mon Jen, we are old enough to defend ourselves, we are not little schoolgirls, always stand right up for your opinion.
If someone say that I'm wrong because of this and that, I will consider it but not for a big mouth.

As a new person here I actually like this feature.  It reminds me of when you get feedback on ebay.   If someone has a lot of smites I don't think they are a bad person I'll just consider they may be blunt or bold in what they say.

Also when you click on the reputation you can see who gave it to you.  Like the two smites you have from Jen61 that's obviously a personal thing and the way the smite is set up is that you can read the actual post.

On another site I go to they have a "thanks" feature that I really like and wish was on here.  You can tell when someone is not being polite because people will not "thank" their post and it tends to get overlooked.

Fullmoon,
Unfortunately, there's no way to opt out of the rep system at this time. But I don't see that as a bad thing. Anyone who posts with any regularity ends up with a few smites. I had a few under my name back when we had the old system.* If you look at people's reputations, often the number of smites is small compared with the number of applauds. Tekla has 160 applauds to 5 smites for example. Anyone who has posted enough to garner that much praise is going to receive a few smites.

*I got 100 for being the forum admin when we added the new system, so I only have 20 applauds now.
Nero was the Forum Admin here at Susan's Place for several years up to the time of his death.

I never use the smite button. I use big girl words, and it makes me even more potent enemies. There are people here who have wanted to burn me at stake - F 'em. This is a support site. (not a stalker ground or hate factory)

  8) isn't stalker ground a horror movie?

I've only been smited by creepy people. Those are gone now. Oh well.
