When Jamie "Nīoi" Tabag began her undergraduate work for Hawaiian studies at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, she noticed something missing from her history lessons.

It was the history of the māhū, and Tabag dedicated her thesis, "Māhūwahine, Hawaiian Transsexual Experience," to their stories.

"A māhū is someone who was born as a boy but decided to transition to a girl," Tabag explained at her presentation last Tuesday.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
