First, good spokespersons don't even have to come out of the community they are speaking for.  And sometimes its' easier to put away the 'me', and tell the story of the 'we', if you are separated by a degree or two.  Also, just to begin with and all, you have to know, or be part of, the 'we' to start with - so you have to have some contact and participation in the larger community in order to get your story beyond 'me' and into 'we'. 

And I can see where it would be somewhere between 'hard' to 'impossible' for many people to move from 'me' to 'we.'

I don't think so. With the social anxiety I have at this point, I try to avoid social situations. Besides which, I only know what's true for me and I know I can't speak for anyone else, and I wouldn't want to.

I would never set out to be a spokesperson for a group, but I can be a spokesperson for my experiences. Some of those experiences will likely have been similar to those of other transpersons. Some will not.

I've been asked by a pastor at one of my churches to address the congregation regarding my transition. It could be viewed that this would be a chance for me to be a transgender spokesperson. But, it would be dishonest for me to claim that title or even approach my address in that way. I am not an expert on the transgender community. I'm an expert on my experience, and even that might not necessarily be true.

Seems like every day, I'm a spokeswoman for Transpeople . I dress for success as I go out to do a lot of business errands . I use facial products to help me stay looking healthy and I do my best to have grace .

Without trying to sound egotistical, many women who know me for all of whom I am have commented on my appearance. I like talking with medical personnel as to who we are . I feel I'm helping to pave the way for the younger people to gain a foot hold .

I have said this before , "STOP THE SHAME " . Dress as you feel the most comfortable in the gender in which you feel best represents you! I don't care where you really fall on the Gender rainbow . Do it . ellen
