ELEANOR HALL: It's long been theorised that genes play a part in mood disorders.

Now an Australian scientist has identified a gene which may help identify people at risk of suicide.

John Mann, who's the chief neuroscientist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, says a variant of the gene called RGS-2 can be found more often in those who attempt suicide.

The discovery could lead to a gene test to help clinicians determine who is at risk.

Dr Mann spoke about the discovery to Peter Lloyd.

These so called genetic discoveries really burn me up.

They come along every so often, claiming to be able to predict this or that. They are utterly unprovable for anyone who isn't a genetic scientist and any genetic scientist with the ability to check the results can't because the whole 'discovery' has been patented.

No doubt, the next we will hear about this nonsense is appended to some advert for some new happy pill selling for huge bucks.

Nah, it's just the media that kind of over-interprets stuff. I've never heard a scientist talk the way headlines do. And no, this 'discovery' is not patented.
