A transvestite from the village of Tjällmo in south-eastern Sweden has had his application for a name change turned down.

Lennart Widahr had wanted to change his name to Pia but the National Tax Board (Skatteverket) informed him that the only possible way for him to receive a female name was to first have a sex change. Widahr has no plans to do so, according to newspaper Östgöta Correspondenten.

what about the people who want to get a sex change but havent gone through it yet, can they not change their name until they have surgery?

I'd move to a gender neutral name if this were the case. There are many lovely names to choose from. I wonder why the government cares what you want to call yourself however. As long as they get the taxes from you, why should they care?

I don't see why this concerns the state, but I also do not think transvestites deserve the same legal rights to change gender as transsexuals deserve.

That's like saying transvestites should be able to get HRT, change their gender and get surgery. No way.

Now is this person really a transvestite or is this how they are labeling him/her?  Personally, I don't see why a transvestite would want or need his name changed legally, but of course there are always exceptions, and Virginia Prince is/was(?) one of them.  I understand she changed her name and lives/lived(?)  her life as a woman but does not/did not(?) consider herself to be transsexual.
