Ask Matt: A Concerned Grandmother, a Transgender Grandchild

A reader writes: "I am the grandmother of a young man (age 18) who is undergoing sexual confusion (his words) and is now discussing becoming a female. I am totally supportive of whatever decision he makes but don't know how best to show him my support. I just want to understand what he is going through.

"Most recently, he went to his senior high school class dressed in female clothing and wearing make-up. I don't know why he would put himself in that position. What message was he trying to relay? A counselor brought him home and he is now undergoing therapy.
