Do I have to have both done before i fill out the paper work or can I Just have the one done to show that I am serious about this change?

I would call one of the LGBT centers in the state if there isn't somebody here. I know somebody who had their marker on ID changed without surgery and after stopping hormones.

In my state, I've been told that I have to be on three months of HRT and then I can legally change my listed sex. So, I'm assuming California won't be much more strict than that, being that its a more liberal state with a lot of LGBT friendly areas. However, as Nygeel said, you should check somehow. I would also suggest looking up some trans-resources for your state as it's possible to find the answer online.

Actually...I found this. I don't know if this is going to give you the information you're asking for, but it seems like it might.

I don't know the requirements for California, but if SRS is required, some top surgeons will write a letter saying that "irreversible sexual reassignment surgery" has been performed. Dr. Garramone is one, I believe.

Depends on the state. In KS you can chance your DL as you meet the "physical critera for the target sex". Due to careful phrasing I was able to it changed along with my passport by stating that T led to "masculine hair growth in his face and chest, the development of his clitoris into a neo-phallus, and a change in sweat patterns that are more consistent with the male sex." Because I included a line stating that these changes were due to "completing clinical treatment" I was able to get a permanent US passport issued to me as a male as well.

IL & the Social Security office both just require gender reassignment surgery without specifying the procedure. I'm going to attempt to get those updated with a hysto because I can't afford top surgery.

Hope that helps. The only real solution to know for sure is to look up the agencies policies/call and pester them to look them up for you. Online resources like those provided above can be a good start, however.

In California you have a few options. When you change your name you can also change your gender but only if you have had a surgery and a letter from the surgeon saying its irreversible or your doctor that is prescribing hormones will sign the court affidavit stating that your changes are irreversible.

If you have a name change already and have not had surgery you can have your Dr prescribing your hormones or your pcp fill out this form for you http://dmv.ca.gov/forms/dl/dl329.pdf and take it to your local dmv. If your Dr wont put its permanent you can get a provisional license for five years in your new gender while your taking care of everything. The only thing with that is if you get pulled over by a cop it will show your old license and a new one. I just changed everything in California :D.

Let me know if you need anything else.

And yes, Dr.Garramone gave me ten copies of a notarized letter saying my surgery was irreversible and a bunch of other wonderful language and said if I needed more just email.

Edit: Apologies, just noticed you said you had your top surgery but the same applies. You need that form to change your liscence or they just wont do it. You can message me if you need anything else, like I said I changed my info with Cali right before I moved to Orlando and it was a bit frustrating.
