Hi, I am a straight male who has just started a relationship with a MtF girl. First time with a TS for me. She has had previous boyfriends. I think at this point we are both very happy with our relationship. She is progressing through her transition. So far she has had FFS, voice & tracheal procedures. Planned are breast enhancement & SRS. I've read a few books on gender research, Transgender voices (Lori B. Girshick) & Transgender Realities (G.G. Bolich, Ph.D.). This relationship is starting to get very serious and I want it to succeed. I never had to deal with transition issues before or questions I myself have about my sexual orientation. I am just looking for good advice or heads up about potential problems. Thank you for any help.

Many things to be aware of but talking with your girlfriend is probably the best way to learn what is important for you to know. Other than that, be prepared for dealing with ignoramus? type people.

You have met a very normal woman who has some special problems. Talk to her, love her, support her and accept her. And you will find she will do the same for you. It's called a loving relationship.

There is nothing odd about your sexual orientation, you are a straight guy who is having a relationship with a straight woman. I'm also a straight woman, I'm not gay, I like guys. It is all pretty simple really, just seems odd until you get used to it.

What you have is truly unique and very special.

I've long held a belief that Significant Others are the unsung heroes of this community. For one to transition, requires an absolute major remapping exercise of ones self, both physically, mentally and emotionally; which doesn't happen all that easily. Thanks to the stability and insights from SO's the journey to fulfillment is made a little easier.

There is a lot of info and resources here for you both, plus there is an amazing wealth of first hand experience from those that have "walked the talk."

Welcome to Susan's. I agree that talking to your girlfriend is the best way to know what to look out for, but I also think reading is a great start. Simply assessing facts and perspectives has made a world of difference for me.
