In the wake of Canada's continued support of a no-fly rule for anyone who fails to meet gender norms, as subjectively assessed by that country's border police, a harrowing tale emerges of an incident last year in the United States.

This is the sorry tale of how US Customs officials decided to apply such a test – and as a result humiliated and embarrassed a Canadian woman who was on her way to run a marathon and visit friends.

The story, released today by Christin Milloy, who also alerted the world to Canada's no-fly rule, is that of Jennifer McCreath, from Newfoundland.

The problem with the opinion piece is that it begins with a falsehood in the opening line ...

The problem had nothing to do with gender norms, but that the transgendered woman was traveling on an obsolete passport that did not properly reflect her transition.  Buried in the article was this ...

To add insult to injury, it subsequently transpired that had she chosen to do so, she could have obtained a temporary passport from the Canadian Passport Office in the two years prior to her surgery.

It is incumbent on the travelers to know and understand the rules and regulations of the countries they plan to visit. The old adage, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse," is aptly applied here.

It is wise to have the proper passport. Until we get the laws changed, we had better follow them to the letter.

Several months before Transport Canada introduced their discriminatory ID regulation which, technically, completely bans almost all trans people from flying, one woman's travel plans were turned into a terrible ordeal of nightmarish proportions—and all because the Canadian government denies trans people access to proper ID.
